Where Have I Seen This Before? Oh Yeah, Everywhere.

    THE BASICS

With more mouths to feed than resources to feed them with, planet Earth is in trouble. To save it, 50 of the brightest women in the world travel through wormholes leading to other parts of the galaxy in search of resources to bring back home. As you can no doubt guess, things do not go well.

    MY COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF

    • The world created here, while far from original, is interesting and something I'm looking forward to seeing more of. Not much happens beyond basic set up and some decent action story-wise, but what's there is entertaining. Also, the ending makes me really want to see what's coming up next.

FEEL THE STING OF MY DISCONTENT!

    • While I was excited to read a Sci-Fi comic about space travel, I knew the chances of it being full of cliches was high, and sure enough, it was full of cliches. For example, alien life on other planets are just larger, more than likely hostile, versions of the life forms on Earth (insects in this case). Worst of all though, is the arbitrary scientific reason for women to start showing more skin until they're wearing only what can't be covered by clever hand, scenery, or word bubble placement. Much of the content in this book had me rolling my eyes or sighing in annoyance.

    • The art leaves much to be desired, though that has less to do with the story's depiction and more to do with what's being depicted. The artwork is just fine. Good, even. But how many times have you seen giant insects? I can think of a multitude of comics, films, shows, books and video games (especially video games) that feature giant mean bugs that attack and terrorize the main characters. Nothing shown here is an attempt to add visual layers to the idea. It's all just recycled imagery.

    WAIT, WHAT?

    • A large portion of the story here revolves around the disaster of a seemingly normal recon mission. A disaster that could have been avoided if all the super smart astronauts had took a few minutes to scan the planet they were about to explore. Was that just an accident on the crew's part or are these people really just jumping on to foreign worlds without gathering Intel first?

WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE

The comic I was hoping 50 Girls 50 would be and the one it actually was were, unfortunately, very different. While I hoped for a compelling piece of Science Fiction, what I got was a mildly entertaining but cliche ridden story that really isn't trying very hard. Perhaps those of you who don't read much Sci-Fi won't be as bothered by many of this comic's problems as I was though, and there are some good aspects to it, but you won't be missing much if you pass on this. At least that's the case for now.
