In the post-apocalyptic world of the future, the Grendel clans are taking over -- much to the dismay of a certain private investigator who's been called in to investigate a murder, an investigation that takes him to New Orleans, where he finds himself smack in the middle of not one, but four Grendels... and devils they are, indeed!
Josef Mantovani is hired by Guillaume Batiaque to investigate the murder of his brother, Emile, a New Orleans chef. Meanwhile four Grendels begin their own seemingly separate plans: Alfred Bixby, who is insane and believes himself to be a knight in the service of Charlemagne, fights vampires in the Amazon; Gloria DeVere, an English art curator who had never seen battle, travels to North America to find a rare artwork known only as the "treasure"; a mysterious black Grendel known as Dulac tries to interfere with Josef's investigation; and an even more mysterious gentlemanly Grendel whose features are cloaked under the shadow of his hat rakes in tons of money as a gambler.
