Deadpool's Creator Discusses Excitement Over FXX's Animated Series And New Comic

Creator Rob Liefeld talks about the original graphic novel Deadpool: Bad Blood as well as his thoughts on the new FX animated series.

Rob Liefeld is responsible for the creation of a plethora of characters in comics, such as Cable, Domino, Shatterstar, and plenty more, but the most notable of them is the "Merc with a Mouth," Deadpool. Aside from the 2016 film and its upcoming sequel, FXX recently announced an adult animated series is in the works.

However, Deadpool is still going strong in the realm where he originated: comics. Today, Marvel released an original graphic novel titled Deadpool: Bad Blood, written by Rob Liefeld, Chad Bowers, and Chris Sims, with Liefeld doing the art. This 100-page book introduces a new villain, Thumper. "In terms of Deadpool having a nemesis, he has a borrowed group of bad guys. They belong to other characters," Liefeld explained to GameSpot. "He's short on his own rogues gallery. Those uniquely Deadpool. I figured let's give him a menace and nemesis that is unique to him and over the course of the story, you'll see Thumper has touched X-Force somewhat and Deadpool and Domino."

Liefeld explained that fans of the character come from all over the place: comics, the movie, and especially the world of video games, like Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, where Deadpool gained a ton of mainstream appeal, prior to the 2016 movie. Along with Bowers and Sims, Liefeld wanted to appeal to as large of an audience as possible.

The graphic novel, Bad Blood, explores Wade Wilson's (Deadpool) past all while introducing this new villain. "It's about the depths our new character took to emulate everything about Wade," Liefeld said. "I just wanted to do something more character driven in terms of establishing a new, sustainable nemesis for Deadpool and relationships are the best way to establish that."

If the name "Thumper" seems familiar, it might be because it's named after the character from Bambi "[W]hen I said I wanted the bad guy's name to be Thumper, I was scared to form those words," explained Liefeld. "I thought I was going to get laughed at. When I was a kid, my dad drove me to the drive in, and my parents took me to see Bambi, and Thumper was the name of this cute little rabbit. Now, Thumper is the name of a guy who beats Deadpool into the pavement. [Marvel] was like, "Yeah! Cleared! We love it! Awesome!" I can now say that Deadpool is battling Thumper, so there's something real rich from my childhood there. It's so damned funny."

Liefeld is extremely passionate about Deadpool and genuinely excited about what is being done with the character on both the small and large screen. However, the recent news about the adult animated series is something the Deadpool creator cannot wait to share: "The secret I had to keep that was the toughest in the last 14 months was that Deadpool cartoon on FXX. I have great friends in the business. They're my pals. I do dinners and lunches with them. They proclaimed to me in March of 2016, 'Deadpool's gonna be an adult cartoon.' I'm like, 'WHAT?!' I kept all this to myself, and I got the call late last fall that Donald Glover was going to be writing and producing it, and I almost drove off the freeway. I just couldn't believe it."

"It just continues to build off that relationship--that Marvel is doing a lot of business with Fox, which is good for everybody. It's cool, man. I was fortunate enough to see Donald the night of the Golden Globes, where he had won an armful of awards for Atlanta, deservedly so. I congratulated him on his new gig--him and his brother--on Deadpool, and he was excited and had tons of greats ideas, and I can't wait to see what he's going to come up with and how the character benefits from another brilliant, creative mind. It's gonna be great."

Deadpool: Bad Blood is now available in stores. You can see an unlettered preview of the book above.

@Thor_Parker82: me too

Still has some negative Liefeld-ian stuff like weird feet and unnecessarily over sized guns and shoulder pads but compared to his other work it is a huge improvement. At least the characters are somewhat proportional and actually obey basic human anatomy

I'm a big Deadpool fan.....Bought and Read Deadpool: Bad Blood.....It's gotta be one of the worst Deadpool book I've ever read. I kept skimming it, just trying to get it over with. Never laughed once. Surprisingly the art was the only decent part of it.

One of the best OGNs ive read period. I put it right up there with Starlin's Infinity series. I loved the story and how it took a little more serious tone with Deadpool. Not everything Deadpool has to be funny, Classic Deadpool was not the same buffoon that he is now.

A true deadpool fan would enjoy the character development and overall plot of the story, instead of looking for a laugh. Bonus points for Cable and X-force for showing up

5/5 easily, must read.

If I like Deadpool but I´m not the biggest fan (I´m a casual reader of Deadpool, I have probably read around 20+ comics of him plus his appearances on other books) will I still enjoy it ??

Also, are you referring to Starlin´s recent Infinity trilogy ??

I think you'll enjoy it yeah, its really cool and it offers some insight on Wades' past (which is actually quite vague)

Deadpool also gets some really cool feats and character development.

and yeah Starlin's Infinity Trilogy. I enjoyed reading the OGN as much as those

EDIT* just don't go into this expecting a barrel of laughs... its not, this is more serious (relatively) story line.

Even Classic Deadpool, right down to the Joe Kelly definitive run was funny...Or even before that during his first appearances when he was written by Fabian Niceza, he still was funny. It's the balance of humor and seriousness that makes Deadpool what he is. It's a fine line only the masters can walk. Lean to far to the humor side (Like Daniel Way), then he becomes a joke. Lean to far to the seriousness (Like these guys), and he becomes just like every other anti-hero out there. Take away the humor and he's every other tragic anti-hero with a dark shady past. What makes Deadpool a great character is the fact that he hides his flaws and insecurities with humor. We laugh with him, while deep down inside he's crying. Take that away....what is he?

As for character development....there wasn't anything I haven't seen before and seen been done better. A villain from Deadpool's past, Been done before and done better (T-ray). Villain ties with Weapon X, Again Done Before and done better (Slayback). Deadpool taking responsibility for his past actions, done before and been done SOOOO much better (Joe Kelly's run? Or Even Gerry Duggan's current run). Deadpool discovering a secret from his past he had forgotten, Deadpool hurting his friends to keep them safe, Deadpool having to kill someone he doesn't want to.....All been done before, and done better.

Sure things like Domino, the return of Kane, and the classic X-force was all well and good. But fan-service does not make an engaging story. I guess I just wasn't engaged with this story as much as others. If other people like it, that's fine. It's still miles better than the pile of poo that is the majority of Daniel Way's run. But I've been reading Deadpool for years and I was excepting better.

Um Deadpool had decent nemeses but they killed them all. Ajax was actually pretty badass, and T-Ray was interesting. They could definitely bring him back. I also would love a return of Agent X even as an ally (maybe Domino's new partner running the Mercs for Money)

Cool. It's good to see Liefeld getting back to his roots, so to speak. I'll have to pick up a copy of this in the near future. I'll definitely have to check out the cartoon series as well.
