Planet Death ends on a high note
X-O Manowar #14 is the final chapter of ‘Planet Death.’ Can Aric unite enemies and free his people or will the Vine council final destroy the X-O armor once and for all?
Writer Robert Venditti has written an intriguing, exciting and satisfying story arc with ‘Planet Death.’ In this final chapter the VIne council reveals to the priest the truth behind why the X-O armor has never been successfully worn by any Vine and why they never will. What is of interest is how the priest’s faith is challenged by this revelation and will it destroy everything he believes? The Vine council is backed into a corner when not only the priest and the pious soldier are convinced that Shanhara’s prophecy has been revealed but the leader of the Vine army General Axil concedes that a worthy one has been chose and that he will no longer fight.
The council now only has one option; to eliminate all of Loam and start over by killing Aric, the armor, the Visigoth and it’s own people. This is truly a story of faith verses fear and the religious overtones of a savior to all people can not be understated. Aric is a true hero in every sense of the word. He sacrifices, unites and defends not only what’s important to him but those who can’t fight for themselves. He doesn’t want to conquer, only return the power back to those who have had it stolen. Venditti has crafted a well rounded and fulfilling tale. There’s plenty of action and the brisk pacing of the dialogue never gets boring or preachy all while still testing the values of faith.
Cary Nord’s art is beautiful to look at and he has a talent for big splashy action but focuses just as much attention to static dialogue panels giving the book a nice balance and tone. His attention to detail is remarkable as well especially in the most chaotic of battle sequences. It shows he cares about even the smallest elements which enriches each and every panel.
X-O Manowar is another solid and exciting title in the Valiant universe. Planet Death revealed true character in Aric and completed his journey to wield and bond with Shanhara and use it to return freedom to an alien race who wanted to destroy him and his people. X-O Manowar is one of many Valiant titles that should be a must read for fans of great characters and exciting storytelling!
