I have recently read Age of X in it's entirety and while I think it's generic crap, it did have some interesting things about it......
The story itself is sort of mundane. It's sort of like an X-Men centric House of M scenario where a certain character alters a reality to their specifications and some changes reverberate when the reality is set straight again. It's also similar to Age of Apocalypse in the sense that it has a novelty, "What if" type aspect where the X-Men are formed, or not formed, under different circumstances and characters have different allegiances and wear different outfits and have different appearances, or in some cases are completely different characters altogether. It isn't as over hyped, grandiloquent and prolonged as the Age of Apocalypse either.
It features a character, in this case Rogue, learning that reality isn't the real reality, not unlike the plot of aforementioned stories like House of M and Age of Apocalypse, so different characters conspire to stop her and some to assist her. Again, like those other stories. There is an Avengers type entry to the series where it features a group of superhumans who hunt down mutants (Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Susan Storm Black Widow, and Ghost Rider) and instead of telling an interesting story of how prejudice might exist and in reality there really is no such thing as "good and evil" and just people who believe what they are doing is right, they just primarily act like psychopaths until a couple of them have a change of heart and fight the others. Typical super hero comic drivel.
The artwork in the X-Men Legacy entries in the series and the promotional art were done by Clay Mann who is a great artist, though in twenty years comic book hipsters will probably look back at his work and heavily criticize it, you know, like Jim Lee. The other entries have serviceable art but nothing that stands out.
There some pretty good takeaways from it though....for instance I thought the use of Gambit was nice. Gambit is always used better in alternate universes actually, because he is usually some sort of loner or in the case of something like Age of Apocalypse, he was tasked with stealing something.... because is a thief. I don't know, he just seems "cooler" I guess and more interesting if he is just a character that shows up and interacts in a story arc once in a while as opposed to just being X-Men member #000026.
Also Pixie, who was named Nightmare in this, looked much better as a gargoyle woman than how she usually looks, which is like a character from Rainbow Brite.
Another thing worth mentioning is the Guthries. Their family is killed and they form X-Force. Not only was Cannoball field leader in of the X-Men type group (yay) but Paige, otherwise known as Husk, Cannonball's sister, also played an important role. I don't remember what happens to Paige, but Cannonball tragically dies (boo) near the end.
If nobody remembers, Paige (Husk) was an astute young girl with a promising future and an obsession with being the leader of an X-team in the pages of Generation X, became little more than Angel's semen depository in the pages of X-Men, then retired to a life of having random X-character syndrome since then with mental instability and lack of control with her powers. She has since recovered from that. Her power was pretty unique and I would have liked to see more of her.
Anyways, it was nice to see the two siblings interacting and be important X-Men members. I would have liked or would like to see a series with them possibly splitting leadership duties among a team. I suppose you could have them bicker as siblings do while trying to lead, might be a neat dynamic for a spin off title.
And speaking of things I would like to see.......
How come this group isn't just the X-Men now?? This was Dani Moonstar's Cadre and I found this to be the best line up and the most interesting thing in the entirety of Age of X. Dani Moonstar using her archery skills, Karma, Magma, Douglock, Sunspot and Dust. Seriously, somebody create a book with this group. If you don't want it to be too New Mutants-y you could swap out Magma for Firestar or something. I would much rather read about these guys than most of the current X-Men characters, I mean, does anyone really care about the further adventures of Wolverine and Jean grey, who really aren't Jean and Wolverine but totally are, or Colossus and Nightcralwer who have each been through their 17th dramatic emotional outlook on life at this point?? I don't.
Make that happen.
