I have Messiah Complex and I quite enjoyed it, but I have been hesitant to pick up Second Coming.

I get the feeling it is even more actioney and too similar to Messiah Complex. I know about the character death so that won't be a surprise for me.

So, do you think it is worth reading and why?

Yes. Its awesome, everybody gets to look cool all the X-Men characters and supporting characters featured have arcs. Its a real game changing storyline with 4 or 5 climaxes...pretty action heavy, but it never feels forced as much as the culmination of something important and its just sad that its follow up was the poorly written AvX

It's one of the better X-Men crossovers, which isn't saying much.

I usually have an unpopular opinion when it comes to X-Men, so, with that said, I would say nothing X-Men related after 1990 is "worth reading".

Second Coming has too many silly plot elements for me. "The mutant savior", "time traveling madness" "the looming possible threat of Hope Summers".

I didn't care for all the anti-mutant villains being conflated into one super group either. They took characters who were interesting in their own right like Donald Pierce and characters that had potential to be interesting, like Bastion, and made them into The Legion of Doom. Seriously, Donald Pierce didn't like mutants, sure, but he was more of an X-Men villain because he had grudges against them, it's doubtful he would have allied himself with a parody of a right wing Christian like Stryker, it's almost like writers don't do any research and seriously throw darts to come up with stories.

The whole story was more predicated on action, had shallow interactions between characters and the villains were bland, predictable and redundant. Nothing worth reading honestly.

Oh yeah, they also ruined Bishop.

@tristanheron: No, not really. Most X-Men crossovers are bad. I only like Mutant Massacre.

    Good post. I agree.

I also wonder if you liked Messiah Complex.

Nah. Not really. More near pointless action. I have always loved Floating Hands Studios abridged summation of it. It's more entertaining than the actual comic.

Second coming was awesome in my opinion awesome story so many characters get there own epic moments including Rogue, legion, warlock, night crawler, and magneto just to name a few. I even picked up Second Coming Revalations because I'm a sucker for Magik but if you liked Messiah Complex it's a must read

@tristanheron: Just make sure to read House of M first. It's not that great but it starts the whole mess leading to Second Coming.

    Thanks for all the comments.

So I've now read Second Coming. I thought it was okay. I don't like the way it started with everyone being killers, but it got better when Hope arrived in Utopia. I actually quite liked Hope as a character in this. It was quite a tense and epic conclusion. Overall though I prefer Messiah Complex.

Does anyone have recommendations about what to read around or after Second Coming? I'm thinking maybe New Mutants vol 3.

@tristanheron: YES New Mutants vol 3 deserves a cover to cover. Otherwise....to be honest nothing else in the Hope Summers story is relevant anymore or good....it is truly a waste of time to follow her

It's not "a mind plowing piece of art", but it's an entertaining, nicely-plotted and should-be symbolic for constructive cooperation event that definitely has much more positive than negative sides and introduced some paradigm changers to the course of action that has become pivotal to X-mythos, and gladly so.

So yeah, it's worth reading. To an X-fan? A definite must read imo.
