How would they handle it?

More or less the same depending on their team. Lets say the Uncanny line up. Storm and Banshee take the air, Colossus and Cyclops handle the ground, Nightcrawler ultimately saves everyone's ass, but gets over shadowed by Wolverine who though logically shouldn't take on Loki would and would hurt him.

Movie X-Men?

Well basically, at the start Jean Grey would faint then wake up and kill herself, Cyclops who had grown full stubble from the time she fainted to the time she revived would also die, and the awaking Jean Grey would also kill sexy Professor X (played by James McAvoy) thus sending and triggering both tall Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) and sexy Magneto (played by Michael Fassbender) into uncontrollable and intense rages, where they would give smoldering looks into the camera intensely conveying their intensity and jawlines and with Wolverine snarling like some sort of ferocious animal and Magneto snarling like some sort of uh... ferrous... magnet.   
 
Then Loki would kidnap lame whiney can't use her powers well at all Rogue who could probably be beaten by a waitress instead of cool badass comic Rogue who soloed Thor once, one shot Wonder Man once, taken on and beaten Nimrod etc etc which would prompt Magneto who would feel strange and inappropriate stirring in his loins, inappropriate not because of his age, but because his whole freaking gimmick is losing the love of his life (and parents and children) because of wartime bizz and wouldn't let that seeping wound ever close, it would prompt that Magneto to throw a coin into Loki's eyes, making him say ouch. Then Wolverine would leap 200 hundred feet to stab Loki making his tongue roll out of his body uncontrollably, then Storm would fly down and say with electric intensity.  
 
"Do you know what happens to a Norse trickster god when it gets struck by lightning the same thing that happens to everything else" then Storm would zap Loki and nothing would happen because his brother is freaking Thor and he is use to that kind of thing. However the whole money to the eye and "Wolverine Slash" attacks were enough to wound him to the point Loki would cough and fall over and transform into Mystique who would be like... uh... dying... OMG you guys... was just dressing up as Loki for halloween... I wasn't kidnapping Rogue... she's actually mah daughter... **dies** Que credits and cinema goers explaining how despite how bad that movie was, it was still better than X-Men 3.
