What are, in your opinion, the best runs on any X-men comics. But, please, avoid saying Whedon's Astonishing X-men. That's probably what everyone is going to say, and I want to see other opinions.
X-Men
Team » X-Men appears in 13417 issues.
The X-Men are a superhero team of mutants founded by Professor Charles Xavier. They are dedicated to helping fellow mutants and sworn to protect a world that fears and hates them.
Best runs on X-men titles.
In recent contexts, Brian Wood's fabulous eight-issue run on Adjectiveless X-Men. An underrated hidden gem.
Took about four posts but Chris Claremont's tenure on the X-books. Mind you, they are a bit dated. Books of their time, if you will. Going back and reading them now, the cheesy dialogue may be a somewhat of a chore to read through...
Back in the day when the X-Men were in the Outback. I love that run. I wish that team would get back together for one more story...

Goodness gracious yes.

Best run of last year anyway.

Lol, when I opened the thread I was gonna say Astonishing X-Men... so now I'll choose New X-Men by Morrison
haha! me too!
I liked Lobdell's run...his X-Men could be considered the highlight of the 90's Marvel comics lineup
Claremont forever.... basically, the X-Men wouldn't even be the X-Men if it wasn't for him.
EDIT: Claremonts orginal run....when he came back in the 2000s, it was terrible unfortunately

Claremont may have some quirks, but I tend to think they are the result of not having full control and having to work around editorial/senior level mandates. This was one of my favorite runs, despite a few different artists, but those covers from the Outback Era were great! You would buy the book and read a story with characters who seemed very real. Loved it. Especially the lineup! There were a ton of great stories that aren't considered "major" or "Essential" during his run, but when you get the chance to track them down show an impressive desire to explore how the characters think w/o completely altering their personality. Dazzler still was fun and more of a civilian, but the heroic qualities you saw in her series came out very often, while Psylocke had quite a few near-teambusting moments while always thinking how vulnerable she was.
@judasnixon: Agreed.
I also Think Claremont and Jim Lee's stuff was fun and exciting. The Whole Messiah Complex arc was fantastic as well.
Aw man! I wanted to say Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, but I loved Chris Claremont's earlier run on X-Men too!
I'd suggest the original series, from, say Days of Future Past (#141 & 142) to the end of the Mutant Massacre (#210-213); That's basically Kitty's original tenure, and really highlights when and how the X-men first got really good. it's about as classic as you'll find.
Other than the original Genosha story, I could never get into the replacement X-men; the stories just stopped being about them being X-men, really, and the art kinda got worse and worse. For me it didn't get good again until the Muir Island saga, and even after that it took quite a while to get consistently good.

Man, I miss this era of the X-Men...
@Rabbitearsblog: *sigh* ...me too.
But Wood's upcoming X-men gives me reason to hope, and both Uncanny X-force and (surprisingly) WatX-men were really good this week, so the future's not so dim. :)

Chris Claremont( before X-treme)
JossWhedon
Grant Morrison
there should be a thread where none of these three are an option. It almost seems as though it's a given that everyone's favourites will include one or more of these three.
What do you guys think?

Chris Claremont and John Byrne's Uncanny X-Men, Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men, and Grant Morrison's New X-Men. Period. If you disagree, I question your validity as an X-Men fan.
Me too, though I wouldn't limit Claremont to the Byrne era (I prefer the JRjr period, myself).
these should just be taken as a given.
Just finished reading the run and I felt it was worthy enough to recommend: Mike Carey's run on X-Men. His run on the X-Men (starts at #188 with art by Chris Bachalo, woo!), continuing into writing the entire first volume of X-Men Legacy, is really deep and emotional, especially for Rogue fans. His run flew under the radar for me because it wasn't one of the main books at the time but seriously, it's good stuff.
Chris Claremont up until the first time he left.
Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing.
Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force.
Aw man! I wanted to say Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, but I loved Chris Claremont's earlier run on X-Men too!
Best run ever, fabian nicieza wrote that series as well from the early 90's.
@mariobroscomics: Claremont and Simonson, hands down. Whedon is a runner up and I can tolerate (I use the word loosely) just about any other writer except Morrison, which I absolutely and passionately deplore.
You mean Weezy? On New Mutants or X-Factor? I prefer most X-books before the Blue and Gold teams. So basically Claremont Byrne/JR JR.
Nothing does or will ever come close to the greatest comic book run of all time. Chris Claremonts beautiful masterpiece of the x nation. 2nd would be grant morrisons new xmen, then joss whedons astonishing xmen

Agree with all this! They just follow each other so well!
@knighthood: Basically the true golden age for me was Marvel graphic Novel 4 to X-Men (v1) #3. X-Factor was hands down my favorite book.
