The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.
I love the surrounding characters and the relationships Azz has built. Any good solo book needs them. Chaing's art work really complemented Azz's take on Greek Mythology. It was both dark, with an edge, and colourful.
I hope he's going to go out with a bang. Really sad to see this run end.
I haven't been a fan. There are a lot of fundamental things that have bothered me about this run. I'm still a little behind on the comics the last few I've read have been getting better. Just read number 26 and it felt like one of the first times Azz really got Diana's personality right.
I think it's a great start for the N52 WW ... the new origin was done well IMO, especially since they gave credence to the previous "made of clay, blessed by the gods" origin. It took me some getting used to, but I've learned to really love the art ... Chiang captures the darkness/horror aspects of the storylines in a unique and compelling manner, and manages to get across Diana's beauty without sexualizing the character. Azzarello clearly had a vision for the character and has done a very good job of realizing it.
On the downside I don't think they've done a good job of keeping WW integrated into the wider DCU/N52 universe. This book feels more like an independent publisher offering (not by any means bad) which has created some inconsistencies across other titles when WW appears. JL WW and SM/WW version feel like they are almost completely different characters at times. It took me some time reading the WW solo book to realize that it wasn't set in a different time than JL ... felt like the solo stories were taking place 5 years after JL because the character is so much more mature in her own title.
As far as I am concerned, Azzarello's Wonder Woman has consistently been the best book that's come out of DC's New52 initiative with the art and story having no rivals since the original Batwoman creative team abandoned ship.
I hate it with every fiber of my being. It dumbs down Wonder Woman's world in favor of Azzarello Land, where everyone speaks in puns and nothing can get done without the help of a man. Father figures, male mentors, long lost brothers and testicles and testosterone are all very big in Azzarello Land.
