I know you all probably thinking why am I posting this on a Wonder Woman forum. The reason being is Wonder Woman's status as a feminist icon and wondering the perspective of fans of a fellow strong feminist DC character. Wonder Woman and Supergirl doesn't have much in common aside from being two of DC's strongest female characters. But I don't remember Supergirl ever being affiliated with the feminist term until this new show. I'm actually glad Supergirl got this series because it is refreshing to see other characters besides Batman in the spotlight.
Wonder Woman
Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8808 issues.
The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.
How do you guys feel about Supergirl being labeled as a feminist?

I think it's somewhat natural to have feminist tones to pretty much any female hero. Wonder Woman's links to the first wave feminist movement are a large part of why she specifically had meaning with the later movements and still stands as an icon. Supergirl wasn't an overt feminist character by design, but I think it's good to see them explore these themes for her!
The way that you're phrasing it in the title almost sounds like it's a bad thing. Feminism at it's core is about equality and fair treatment of the sexes. It would be more controversial if Supergirl was proven a Non/Anti Feminist. If the Punisher believes that Women should earn equal pay for equal work, and shouldn't be overlooked based on gender then the Punisher is a Feminist.
@csg_cl: That is true although the level of feminism differs between female characters. I believe that is why Wonder Woman's role as feminist is so important and it inspires people. The thing with Supergirl is that her and Wonder Woman were both created for the sole purpose of being female equivalents to Superman. Wonder Woman was able to seperate from that narrow idea. Both of their origins stems from feminism but writers never made Supergirl a overt feminist like you stated. It is good that they are exploring these themes for her so that people can seperate her from her cousin. Most people are under the impression that she is just a weaker female ripoff lol which is not good.

Supergirl true enough, but WW was really created as a feminine ideal not as being a "female equivalent" to SM. Marston was aiming to showcase what a super powered individual would be like without the "blood curdling masculinity" of comics (his words). He created her, along with his wife and Olive Bryne, specifically to forward a feminist agenda. Supergirl was a purely commercial (i.e. money maker) venture and in some ways is more of a rip off of WW than SM.
With that said, I agree that WWs role as an icon is hugely important!
Well since the definition of feminism is the idea that men and women should be equal (regardless of what anybody says, that's the definition of feminism) so it'd be pretty bad if people thought Supergirl wasn't a feminist.
@ultra_beleco: Isn't that Superman's job? It is his home not hers. He sure wasn't there to save the men getting slaugthered on Paradise Island. Stop trying to be funny.
@somayareece: It's about equality so it's all good with me
@somayareece: Point is. In comics we can't be certain about equality status in Krypton and it won't make sense for Kara to be a feminist in earth unless she experienced something similar in her hometown.
Contrary to the new show (Witch was something I hated in the pilot) She had lived 90% of her lifespam in Krypton, so if women were not opressed there she would have trouble to relate here. She also sees Earth as primitive compared to Krypton.

there have been women on important counsels, science boards, involved in their laws and what not. I just naturally assumed if a woman is seen in those "important" roles, then there must be some sort of equality on the planet...
apparently there is male oppression even in Krypton. God, Wonder Woman sure has work to do!
except shes been on earth for 14 or so years so your point is moot
