It's a carry over from transactions with the ancient Egyptians who prized Cheetahs and their fur. They were also highly revered during the era of Grecian Egypt so ha! They are Greek... kinda?

@jointron33: cheetahs live in africa as well as in asia. You need to think that the range of cheetahs in BC times was much greater and probably extended into Antolia and south eastern europe.

Cheetahs were imported as pets by quite a few rulers, since northern Africa in the ancient world wasn't some great unknown place and the Greeks were on their own quite capable seamen.
