1894. In Rome, Ugo has a new job: he's employed by a notary who administers the fortunes of many important families. One evening, returning home, he is attacked by a bunch of street thugs. Vittorio De Cesari, a cavalry officer, defends him sword in hand and chases away the bad guys. Between Vittorio and Ugo a deep friendship rises. The officer is the young scion of a noble family who owns an estate in the Roman Castles. Vittorio chooses Ugo as its administrator.
