A Prequel to Top 10 set in 1949, detailling the origin and the creation of Neopolis after World War II, by following the newly arrived Jetlad. The Forty-Niners proved to be one of the best books of the year. Writer Alan Moore and artist Gene Ha continued the high quality work of the original series and also introduced a host of new heroes. Set in Post WWII Neopolis, the book introduced the city through the eyes of a 16 year old war veteran Steve Traynor - better known as Jetlad, and previously seen as an old Police Captain in "Top 10" - as he first arrived in a city being built to contain all the world's science heroes and villains.

The main story followed Steve and German war hero Leni Muller (a.k.a. Sky Witch) in their attempt to fit in to the new city as Leni joined newly formed police force and Steve became a mechanic for the Skysharks (a group of WW II air aces). The new city faced a number of dangers - including gangster vampires, time travelling Nazi's, and an attempted military coup by members of the Sky sharks. The story served as a coming of age - and coming out - story, as the teenage Steve struggled to come to terms with his feelings toward the leader of the Sky sharks, Wulf. Moore's script proved to be as original and brilliant as ever and Ha's amazing artwork was the perfect combination of retro and futuristic.

    Collected in Absolute Top Ten.
