Being born with the ability to alter his his chakra into magnetic fields, he was able to control metal. But drawing inspiration from past hosts of the Shukaku within Gaara, he started using iron powder, also referred to as "Iron Sand," as his primary weapon, able to form it into seemingly any weapon or structure that he wanted. His Iron Sand was the most feared weapon in all of the Sand Village, leading the villagers to believe he was invincible.
 
It would fatefully be discovered that Sasori, a powerful rogue ninja that left the village long ago, was the one that killed the 3rd Kazekage so to make him his most prized puppet.
