Spider-Man battles Gideon and his foot soldiers, who have wounded the White Tiger, Spidey's ally.
After Hector Ayala was shot and thrown out in front of the Daily Bugle building, Spider-Man found out that someone is out trying to kill all the superheroes. That someone turned out to be Gideon Mace, an ex-military officer, who had became obsessed with militarism.
Spider-Man tracked down Gideon's headquarters at an armory through his men. Gideon had prepared an ambush, but to no avail, as Spider-Man successfully took down the insane villain. In the end, however, Spider-Man felt more than sorry for him. In his obsessive act to kill Spider-Man, Gideon sacrificed himself by ordering his own men to shoot when he was in Spider-Man's clutches. Spider-Man leaped off from the bullets in time, but Gideon was brutally gunned down.
Hector Ayala, surviving through an operation, also quit his job as a superhero after the incident, due to both the loss of his family and the addiction his amulets brought him. The amulets were handed to Blackbyrd, requested by him to be returned to the Sons of the Tiger, as Hector searched for an isolated area to live in with Holly Gillis.
