The Silver Surfer receives a distress call from Shalla Bal that is cut short. He immediately returns home to Zenn-La, only to find that it has disappeared. He finds Zenn-La's research satellite and asks the scientists on board what has happened. They do not know, but then they are met by Moondragon, who does.
She is able to take the Surfer on the trail of the entity, which appears as a massive brain floating in space. It is protected by a force field and will not listen to the Surfer. Moondragon tells him that the being is in a dream state, and with her help the Surfer is able to go inside of it's mind.
Once inside, he finds Shalla Bal who tells him that they chose to be put under the beings protection, calling it the Great One. Without trouble from the outside universe, the Surfer decides to stay with Shalla. They live together happily for weeks until one day they throw a grand banquet for the Great One.
He instantly realizes that an outsider is among them and attacks the Surfer. The Surfer tries to reason with him but he keeps on attacking. The Surfer delivers a mortal blow to the Great One, who finally tells him it was fear that caused his attack. He tries to help the Great One, but the doctors are unable to save him.
Moondragon arrives and tells them that once he dies, so will Zenn-La. She cannot save him, but with the Surfer's help she can save Zenn-La. The Surfer returns to the outside world while Moondragon maintains a connection with Shalla on the inside.
He uses the power of a red giant star to power her Mind Gem, giving her the power to release the planet. But when she sends the Surfer in to get Shalla, the Great One dies and she is lost forever.
The Zenn-Lavians now hate the Surfer for taking the Great One and their Empress from them. He leaves the planet in sorrow while Moondragon scolds them, for the Surfer has saved them plenty of times and they would all be dead once again if not for him. But none of this is any consolation to the Surfer, who has lost his true love.
