It's bloody brilliant!!! points to avatar If it's that guy you're talking about, he kicks ass. He's totally twisted and funny as hell. He's vindictive and vengeful and he has a wicked sense of fairness. I love it!
really i read the first issue yesterday and i dont really like the art but its 20 years old so i need to give it some slack but i loved the end of the issue when Dream gets his vengence
When he said Eternity Awake
i was like that aint so bad before i read what he meant and then WOW i really do love the stuff now
now only 84 more issues 75 of the series then what ever is rest of specials
I'm only halfway through the first graphic but I intend to get the whole lot. I have issue 50ish too, that's what got me into it. I just love the concept. Neil Gaiman is swiftly replacing Joss Whedon as the best comic writer ever.
Oh man, that's definitely on my list of must reads now. Lucifer's in the graphic I've got right now. As DC says, the art is old but the writing is excellent.

Every story arc has a different artwork team (except all the covers are by Dave McKean, I think). So artwise, it will vary. I liked or loved all the artwork throughout, but I'm not too picky.
Sandman really begins to take off around the Death issue (although I really liked 24 Hours Diner, but opinions vary on that) and the Doll's House storyline.
Some things happen in the first issue which seem like side comments, but become important later on (TPB's are really nice for this)

I love Whedon's work, all of it, he's awesome. However, Gaiman is lightyears ahead of anything Whedon is doing.
Mind you Whedon cut his teeth writing for television and Gaiman got his start writing comics back in the 80's. So, in reality they are apples and oranges.
