A Family Friendly Time Spanning Space Tale.

This comic was a last minute impulse buy for me this week. I usually can't go wrong with BOOM! Studios stuff so when something of theirs seems even mildly interesting I've learned to just get it.

Upon first glance when I received my issue and cracked it open I noticed this is some kind of Boom! Studios imprint or something. It's called 'Boom! Box'. Uh oh, did I accidentally buy some little kid or teenager-safe book? Well, not officially but I guess I did. It's no biggie though as while it appears to be pretty family friendly it isn't a total little kid book which would have driven me nuts.

The Midas Flesh is a sci-fi story involving a casual, fun, small spaceship crew (one of the crew is a dinosaur it appears) on their way to plunder a world's riches. Switch back to far in the past and another story is being told as well. A twist on a story many of us know, King Midas. The comic switched back and forth between the two scenes throughout.

Entertaining I must say. I was a little worried early on in the book when the characters were really using modern teenaged slang in their conversations. That stuff drives me bonkers and would've totally killed this story for me. As the story progresses though the writer appears to have slowly toned that slang down so it remained tolerable. As a matter of fact I enjoyed reading the casual, easy to read dialogue. The writer maintained a great balance of not making the dialogue too easy for really stupid people to understand, and regular adults! The pace of this story is perfect. Just as easily and the dialogue flows, so does the pace. The author doesn't linger too long in one time and doesn't switch too fast either. Both of the groups of characters in this book's story have been nicely setup and told.

I'm adding this to my pull list. I want to see what these spaceship kids are doing. I want to know more about the past of the planet they are visiting. Incidentally, in the back pages of the comic, Boom! identifies that Boom Box! (at least I think its identified it) as just a catch all for their comic oddities. This doesn't appear to be a kids specific imprint line.

Fans of science fiction, mythology, space operas (i.e. spaceship crews), and light hearted family comics should enjoy this.
