    An 1994 animated feature film by Disney. A self-described tale of kings and succession. Mufasa, king of the lions is assassinated by his brother Scar. The latter proceeds to claim the throne while nephew Simba goes into exile. Years later, Simba returns to claim the throne.

    In the year of its release, the film was the greatest box office hit on record. Few others have surpassed it. Also a critical success and popular enough to receive a sequel, a prequel and a spin-off television series.

    There is controversy over the precise origins of the story. Disney officially credited the Biblical tales of Joseph and Moses, as well as "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare for inspiring several elements of the story. Uncredited were several stylistic and plot elements from "Kimba the White Lion" (1965 - 1966), a well-known Japanese animated series. This spawned several accusations of plagiarism.

    Disney, for all practical purposes, invented the animated feature, and for decades pioneered the genre’s significant advances like special effects animation, and the multi-plane camera. The studio was riding high in the late 80s and early 90s with top-notch films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.
