By the mid-1970s, owing to the successful efforts of its new creative teams, the Legion of Super-Heroes began to share equal billing with its iconic member, Superboy. The new, racier Legion's popularity skyrocketed, setting the stage for more 30th century classics to come. This volume celebrates that legendary era of Legion history with 16 classic stories from SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #213-223 and KARATE KID #1, written by Cary Bates, Jim Shooter and Paul Levitz, with art by Mike Grell, Ric Estrada, Michael Nasser and others, and a cover by Grell. In addition, long-time Legion fan Mike Flynn contributes an introduction.
In keeping with the Legion's history of change, editor Murray Boltinoff shuffled the creative teams, bringing in an old hand as well as new, soon-to-be favorites. Newcomer Mike Grell was given the tough task of filling Dave Cockrum's shoes for SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, drawing one of comics' most intricate and popular super-teams. Grell rose to the challenge and quickly made a name for himself, bringing edge-of-your-seat storytelling to the Legion and, along with Bates, Shooter, Levitz, Estrada and Nasser, created one of the Legion's most memorable periods.
