    Origin

The club, lead by John Cleverly Cartney, wanted to overthrow the crown. However, The Avengers, John Steed and Emma Peel defeated them and Cartney apparently fell to his death.

    Creation

The Hellfire Club was created for the '60s British TV series The Avengers episode titled "A Touch of Brimstone". The writers of the show were inspired by the actual Hellfire Club of 18th century Ireland.

This Hellfire Club, in turn, would inspire the Marvel's Hellfire Club. Emma Peel's costume as the "Queen of Sin" would inspire X-men character Emma Frost.

In 2012, Mark Waid , a former X-men writer, revamped the group for Steed and Mrs. Peel's new ongoing series.
