Ted McKeever is a comic book writer and artist who has been working in the field since the early 1980's. Known more as an artist than as a writer (due in large part to the fact that all of his writing projects are ones where he is both the writer and the artist), McKeever holds a sturdy reputation for delivering gritty, highly surreal and often very difficult to describe material. McKeever's "Trippy" subject matter and recurring themes of technology out of control and/or gone wrong as well as bodily modifications draw certain parallels to the work of filmmaker David Cronenberg (Videodrome, Naked Lunch, Dead Ringers) who has a similar reputation to McKeever's in his own medium. This is his blessing and his curse as, with his bizarre material catering largely to a small but loyal audience, much of McKeever's work has been out of print since its initial sequentialized issue printings.

McKeever's earliest works were self published or put out through companies long since extinct. In the late 80's and early 90's however, much of his output (Metropol, Plastic Forks, various fill-ins) was published by Marvel's Epic imprint. Throughout the rest of the 90's, almost all of McKeever's work was published through DC's Vertigo imprint, and almost all of it was written and illustrated by McKeever with the exceptions of The Extremist (written by Peter Milligan), Toxic Gumbo (Written by Lydia Lunch), a brief stint on Doom Patrol and a few fill-in issues on the short lived series Eclipso.

Since 2000, McKeever has gone through long stints of little released activity; much of which due to being tapped to work on a "John Carter of Mars" series that was seemingly aborted. Most of his work since 2000 has been short story contributions to anthology titles such as Marvel Knights Double Shot, The Matrix comics and Marvel Monsters. The sole exception to this was McKeever's art on DC's Enginehead miniseries with writer Joe Kelly; an 8 issue miniseries that, due to low sales, was truncated at 6 issues.

For years, one had to be devoted to McKeever and hunt through back issue bins and ebay listings to get copies of his older work. A few years back, Eddy Current and Metropol were re-released in trade paperbacks but they went out of print again in the seeming blink of an eye. Thankfully, for McKeever enthusiasts, his earliest work, Transit, has recently been released in a gorgeous hardcover edition called "The Ted McKeever library, volume 1: Transit". This edition goes above and beyond, not just reprinting the 20 years out of print issues, but adding new material: an ENDING that never existed before. Volumes 2 and 3 followed, bringing Eddy Current and Metropol back into print in the same gorgeous hardcover format. The following year, DC collected "The Extremist" into a bargain priced $7.99 addition to the "Vertigo Resurrected" line. Early Epic series "Plastic Forks", Vertigo series "Faith", "Junk Culture" and "Industrial Gothic" and DC mini "Enginehead" remain having never been collected in trade.

In 2010, after another 5 year stint of McKeever having little new material in the comic book industry other than short stories and backup features in anthologies, he brought out "Meta4" from Image, his first full length, original tale as writer and artist in a little over 10 years.
