Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Superman never was a good combatant?!

I'm surprised the think of of good days doesn't have the issue where he beat Manchester Black's team. That was pretty damn impressive considering they gave him a good beating the first time he tried to stop them cold. Plus it was some really intense action and drawings of Superman in noticeable pain from their different attacks.
I think its funny that Superman is always drawn as such a poor, straight forward boxer kind of fighter considering the people he's worked with. Batman, Wonder Woman, Karate Kid, Black Canary, Green Arrow, and so many others with martial artitsts that you would think he'd pick up a thing or two. He's been shown to be extremely proficient at attacking pressure points but seldom gets to use it, the last time being against Commander Gor during the World of New Krypton mini-series.
One of the best interpretations I've seen of Superman's fighting ability was actually in the animated Superman: Doomsday film. Both his fight against Doomsday and against his clone show a completely different style of combat for the Man of Steel than any other interpretation in which he's doing combination punches, grabs, throws, wrist locks, rising knee strikes, flips, rolling away from attacks and a bunch of other moves we never see in the comics.
This is definitely one area I hope the DCnU improves as Action Comics and the Superman books continue on is showing him not on the level of other martial artists but definitely a more compotent fighter that has learned a number of moves and tricks from other heroes and just through experience. Given the fact he's much more aggressive in the revamp it would definitely fit that his fighting style has also improved.

Honestly, the Joe Kelly Superman material is one of my weak points as goes continuity knowledge which is funny since I really liked his run on the JLA. I didn't read much of Joe Casey's work on Supes for that matter either. I'd love to check out that issue, though, if you can remember the issue name and number. I'm always up for a good Superman battle so let me know.
I think a lot of writers like to makes his fighting skills a weakness for him since he's so strong in just about every other category, but that isn't always the case. I think in the late Silver and in the Bronze Age he was adept in the Kryptonian martial art of Klurkor. Even in Post-Crisis continuity, I think he mentions picking up pointers from Batman and Wonder Woman. In his Wedding Album, he manages to take on a group of thugs without his powers (Batman did have to step in to help, but, hey, the guy's not used to not having his powers). I imagine his fighting style is something he really developed himself with his ability to fly in mind. It's like aerial combat with a lot of power strikes. He's no Batman or Lady Shiva, but Superman is a pretty capable fighter. I think you'll get to see him put up his dukes quite a bit more in Action Comics.

Ah, nevermind, I found out what issue you were talking about. Action Comics #775. The well-regarded "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" I hope I can find a copy. Can't wait to read it.

I never thought of Superman as a great fighter...his powers just picks up the slack.
Where fighting is concerned, he's definitely overshadowed by WONDER WOMAN and BATMAN in the "Trinity".
