Title says it all.
Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18942 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Can Superman fly in space?
Just asking, because when he was fighting Vandal in issue 51? he stated that he had to jump from asteroid to asteroid instead of, you know, flying.
Yes.
Most versions can, the only notable exceptions are the Byrne version (of course...) and the TAS Superman who was inspired by Byrne's.
Actually, TAS Superman flew in space multiple times.

Always with a breather, and he even needed it in the JL series. The times he didn't use a breather if they exist we can assume he was into the atmosphere.
The simple, shorter answer is yes.
The most complex, longer answer, is yes and no. For a time he had limited time to spend in space since he needed oxygen to live. During Byrne run he could saturate his body with oxygen and keep himself alive in space for a few hours at most.
Later on he went through some changes and post versions became able to sustain themselves in space indefinitely, as long as he didn't depleted his energy reserves or was able to recharge.

Those weren't for the sake of 'breathing', or so he could fly while in space. He equipped those simply so he could communicate to other people while he was in space. He can survive and fly in space just fine.
In a similar vain, he once used a scuba-suit when going underwater so he could talk to Sawyer, even though he didn't need the suit to simply hold his breath, as shown when he saved Aquaman.

He used a breather in JL, ex. the Amazo fight. And it was actually a pretty big point that he could die in space in the episode where Mala and Jax-Ur are emperors of an alien planet.
These instances are the second category I mentioned.

Yes, so he could talk to his team and fight without having to hold his breath. New 52 Superman uses a breathing device in Batman/Superman #28 for this very purpose.

It was a pretty big point that he couldeventually die in space. If you recall, he was fighting them in space (next to a black hole no less) for a short period while holding his breath. That episode only proves my claim.

The last picture is after the video I linked where he explicitly flew into space to stop the Watchtower's laser. He was knocked unconscious by the blast and left in space, unaided, for several minutes. If he couldn't survive in space, he would've died pretty quickly there. Also, he didn't use thrusters with those "rebreathers", so he's still flying on his own initiative, meaning he can fly in a vacuum.
@petey_is_spidey: He was weakened and most of his powers were gone, including flying.
Someone get this kid a comicbook, stat.
