I read a comic where he is near the sun and talks, so he can at least breath the few air particles in the vaccum of space. I guess being in a planet with such hhigh air-pressure has given him big lungs to hold in air.
Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18942 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
Can Superman breath in space?
"There is nothing to breath in space......You can't talk in space.....Unless the DC universe has some substance in space that our doesn't have. "
@Supreme Marvel said: you are right superman can not breath in space because I once saw him all most suffcate in space in the cartoon he can only hold his breath in space
"Buckshot said:"space air"There is no air in space, it was Buckshot is saying.
And no, he doesn't, because you can't breath in space. He has super-stamina, which last for a long time, possible a few hours.
"
" Gambler said:The first one is written by Jeph Loeb, for Superman/Batman. The second one is also written by Loeb and that was for Our World's at War or Superman Volume 2 171."Buckshot said:where are these from, like which comic lines? ""It actually depends on the writer (like everything else). He's said before that he was shown how to do it, but then there's stuff like was posted above (which makes more sense) that shows he can't."Space air" lqtm."
Agreed. There are several instances where Superman is clearly talking in space, then there are others where he admits or is shown holding his breath. Mongul trained Superman on how to hold his breath before the Imperiax Wars for deep space battles.
"
The 3rd one I don't know.
The 4th one is written by Brian Azzarello for Superman: For Tomorrow #01
I don't really trust Loeb to be using much science in his writing. As you can tell for 2 different titles he had him "breathing" in space.
When another writer, whom I agree with writes it is impossible to breath in space.
" Nobody said:Oxygen isn't necessary, any atmosphere will do. Space is a vacuum so there is nothing."Superman can hold his breath for a long time. His body is able to survive the vaccum of space, but if he is out there for two long(could take weeks or longer maybe) he will need to enter an atmosphere to catch his breath. He can't talk in space without an aid, since sound doesn't travel in space."You need oxygen for sound to travel, that's why he can't talk in space without a bubble. "
in the most recent superman 100 minute War they show superman and Kara (along with thousands of other kryptonians) in space with out air. Seems they dont need air but they cant talked to each other either because there are no air waves to vibrate from the sounds of their voices.
Can breath in space- yes or dont need to breath period
can talk in space- no
What I was getting at was the quote below." @Supreme Marvel said:

"The moon actual has an atmosphere, it's just a million times less dense than the earths. Anytime you see someone talk in a vaccum though, it's PIS.

Depends on the writer. Superman was taught how to breath in space by Mongul. Several instances either have Superman sustaining himself in space without any issues, and talking in space as well, making it clear that he can breathe out there. Others have him wearing a suit to sustain himself, implying that he can't breathe. Others just having him holding his breath for undefined periods. Recently, James Robinson has Superman being able to hold his breath out there, and not being able to speak in space, unless his has a respiratory device that allows him to breathe, so he can speak out there.
Superman: Secret Identity. Written by Kurt Busiek. Who also wrote Action Comics and Superman: One Year Later and continued with both. He gets Kryptonian powers. So he doesn't need to breathe in space. However you can't talk in space. In space it's like talking while swallowing - Try it.
I say no. Too inconsistent to get consensus, but most of the scans with him breathing in space, have him talking in space. I say no.
" @Sha said: LIKE THISThat's just bad writing.""
I understand what your getting at but, it's comics "
And to counter that.
Superman doesn't need to breathe, anywhere. And in space he can't breathe, because there isn't anything for him to do that. But he doesn't need to breathe anyway.
It really is up to the writer. See there's all this evidence but in Justice League of America #55 Supergirl was talking to Boodikka no problem. Despite the fact there's no oxygen in space. So it really is up to the writer. They may want to constrain Superman or they may want to portray him as a guy that can do anything even defy science
It really depends on which version we are tawkinq about . If you are tawkinq about Silver Aqe Superman then he doesn't have to breathe at all , it isn't necessary for Silver aqe or Pre Crisis Superman . However the Superman that actually breathes is Post Crisis Superman which can hold his breath for a lonq time , this is the Superman that is created by John Byrne , he has to breathe and can die of suffocation .
He can hold his breathe for undefined periods of time, ranging from a few hours to fifteen thousand years, depending on the writer.
Though I have to question what his purpose for breathing would even be. Humans, and all other aerobic lifeforms, use oxygen to perform cellular respiration and breakdown glucose from food into usable energy. If Superman receives his usable energy right from the Sun, then there really is no need for oxygen, or food for that matter.
@htb106: Depends on the incarnation and who's writing him. For the most part, he can breathe in space for a very long time, so it's not really a weakness. But when you think about it, he shouldn't require oxygen at all because he does not need to perform cellular respiration as he gets all his energy from the Sun.
The last page of 'death of superman, when Doomsday is chained up and flying through space it says something like ' even though there is no sound in the vacuum of space , if there were you'd hear laughter" as you flip to a full page of a clearly alive Doomsday and "ha ha ha ha" printed in speech. So that is something just as powerful as Superman that can not create sound in space. It's just poor depiction of space science whether it be the fault of the writer or the artist. Marvel is just as guilty , as in any Surfer , Galactus or other cosmic title, many characters (who wouldn't survive the vacuum of space let alone need to worry about air) are shown to be able to communicate verbally.
it honestly depends on which version you are talking about . Silver Age , All- Star and Pre Crisis Superboy didn't have to breathe at all , as well as eat or sleep . Now , After John Byrne , Superman has to breathe , he can only hold his breath for a long time then he has to go back to earth and get some more air . So the question was can Superman breathe in space .? The answer is some versions didn't have to breathe at all . And then some could hold their breath for a really long time .
but he really shouldn't have to breathe , eat or sleep any way because he functions off the sun , so thats a flaw in some of the writers .
