I have many concerns.
Having Geoff Johns and Gary Frank together was some thing I was really looking forward to here.
Like me Johns seems to be a fan of the classics but has been able to give a fresh, modern spin. As for Frank, well, he's been one of my favourite artists since his days on Incredible HULK.
How ever so far I've been pretty disappointed.
While the art is truly amazing Johns devotion to the classics has gone a little too far for me on the series in general. In issue one the Clark as Superboy idea was brought back into continuity and as things progress all the silly things from Supermans past seem to be coming back.
The script itself is up to Johns usual high standard but for me personally the elements being reintroduce are grinding my gears a little.
As well as Clark having been the first Superboy Lex grew up in Smallville but hasn't worked out who Superman is? Nonsense.
And in this issue we have a use of freeze breath. A power I always felt was sort of surplus with the main powers Superman has. Supes has done pretty well over the last several years with out being able to cool his soup with a blow.
One thing I do applaude however is the idea that Supes wasn't embraced by the people of Metropolis right away. Good to see him have to earn their trust
John Byrne's not so popular these days but his Man of Steel mini felt like the definitive Story origin story to me at least. Byrne gave us a genuinely Alien Kryton. Story elements and characters actions felt organic. Nothing came across as contrived like the idea of the "S" shield being a Krytonian symbol that coincidently resemble an "S" from earths western alphabet. And the costume. How much Kryptonian cloth does Superman have left? Over time the costume will need repairs.
In places it all feels a little too much as though comic book Superman is being pushed into line with the Superman from other medias. The movies and Smallville for instance. Issue threes rescue of Lois falling from the roof felt as though it was adapted right out of Superman: The Movie.
It's the little details like these that make or break a story for me.
If Johns can repair the damage done to Bizarro over recent years and turn him into more than a childrens version of himself I just might let the rest go.
I'm relying on JMS's Superman run to revive my write my interest in Kryptons last back into continuity though.
I'm gonna score this high 'cause over all it's good but I'm not wild about the fact we're reading silver age Superman.
