Last weekend was the third annual Long Beach Comic Con. In between shooting videos and talking to creators, I took a bunch of cosplay pictures. One of the best and cutest was a dog dressed liked the beloved Krypto (you can check out the cosplay gallery here). I later found out the dog belonged to 30 DAYS OF NIGHT writer, Steve Niles. Unfortunately, Steve's dog, Sonny, is sick and needs your help.

Sonny is an eight-year-old greyhound mix and he's fighting lymphoma. According to Steve's blog:

He has an auto-immune disorder that he was able to survive three years ago. Now he's battling cancer and any help we can get with his hospital bills can go a long way. His chances are good, we seem to have caught it very early, but he has a long road to travel. So far, he has gone through 4 chemos, with many more to come!

If you've ever had a dog in your life, you know they are more than mere animals. They become part of your family. Seeing Sonny at Long Beach, I could tell he was truly a sweet dog. Steve has commented that as a comic writer, he works "check-to-check." Sonny's prognosis is good but his treatments are expensive.

To help out, several comic artists have created and donated original artwork to benefit Sonny. You can see all the auctions here. The page will be updated periodically with more original artwork.

There is more original art coming. You can get a peek at Steve's website. Even if bidding on an original piece of art is out of your spending range, you can still help. You can donate anywhere from one dollar on up. Check your wallet, see that five dollar bill just sitting there, instead of going out an buying a lunch, you could donate it and eat at home. It really saddens me to think of such a sweet dog being sick. I lost my ten-year-old dog a few years ago and simply put, it sucks. None of us are rich. I don't often ask people to donate to causes. If you met Sonny, you'd want to help him.

Poor pup :( Sure do hope he gets the help he needs! Reminds me of my old retrievers I once had.

It saddens me to hear that about the poor dog. I lost my two dogs of 15 and 13 years old and I miss them very much. I hope that the donations made can help out sonny.

Nice to see the people of comicvine are much more pleasant than some of the people floating around on other parts of the internet. Steve Niles put up some horrid responses from people last night on his twitter.

I wish I could bid on that beautiful swamp thing and sonny art but it is a little out of my price range. I encourage everyone to send a few bucks via paypal to help this guy's dog. YES there are probably more "worthy" causes, but this is the one that affects a community you're a part of so help out a bit.

I think its really sad!! I hope Sonny gets better! I am sure everyone here at comicvine wants Sonny to recover 100% and for his auto-immune disorder to just magically go away.

Here's hoping that the dog gets the treatment he needs.

He'll be fine, he's Krypto after all, but seriously I hope him the best.

I am truly sorry for poor Krypto, but I have to agree with Gokujam, I cannot help a dog dying of cancer when are so many humans in the same condition and no one helps them. I'm sorry if I come across as a jerk, but the needs of a Dog cannot come before the needs of other human beings. Sorry

Quit trolling. Every time I read an article about a charity someone always has to get on there high horse and bash it. If you don't like the cause than don't donate, or don't bother commenting about it, or better yet don't even click on the link to the article.

Any cause to protect or save an innocent life (e.g. Sonny) is good.

@Nuec_Sol: I am NOT trolling. I just think I should remind people, that there are HUMAN beings in worst conditions than that dog. Sorry, I don't mean to insult a dying dog and his poor owner, but I wish people had their priorities straight. That dog probably lived a better life than most humans I know.

i donate to many childrens charities on a monthly and the hsus. i will donate to this dog as well, at least this way i know what/ where my money is going. i am a working class citizen by the way.

Also, you cant give it the 'third world country' thing. Yes, people are in bad situations and poor health all over the world, and a lot of us, including me, donate to many causes. But I have owned a dog, and after losing her when she was only 2 years old, breaking me heart, I would do anything to help another dog owner save their pet.
