"STEAL AWAY" is a semi-wordless hand painted woodcut comic based on visions of Nat Turner as described in "The Confessions of Nat Turner" by Thomas R. Gray.
Southampton County, Virginia, 1831. Nat Turner led several fellow slaves in a violent revolt traveling from plantation to plantation freeing slaves and killing 55 - 65 members of the slave owning class. More than 70 enslaved and free black people were involved in the insurrection. As a result, at least 100 and possibly up to 200 black people were murdered by militias and mobs. However, this and other slave rebellions helped to accelerate the Abolitionist movement followed by the Civil War ending chattel slavery in the United States.
