Following the events of 'By Any Other Name', The Enterprise is at one of the farthest reaches of the galaxy when it comes across an M class planet that has been devastated by cataclysm. A disembodied voice, identifying itself only as 'Sargon', claims that it has summoned the ship there, and instructs Captain Kirk to beam a party down to a cave miles beneath the surface.

When the party arrives, however, they learn that Sargon wishes to take over the body of James Kirk, and install two others of his race in the bodies of Officer Spock and Dr. Mulhall.
