Spider-Woman first appeared in 1977's MARVEL SPOTLIGHT #32. Since then, Jessica Drew has pretty much had the same costume. Thirty-seven years really isn't a long time to have the same costume. Characters develop classic looks and you simply embrace them. But Spider-Woman's costume isn't necessarily a favorite among everyone. There's been the occasional arguments against the design of the costume and what it appears to be implying.

That being said, Spider-Woman is getting a new look. Unveiled at USA Today as part of an announcement the character and new costume will debut the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game, we get to see what Jessica will be wearing in the new year.

    No Caption Provided

"As much as I'm a fan of spandex and it has its time and place, I felt Jess as a character could move away from that for a good long while," says Spider-Woman editor Nick Lowe.

It's sometimes hard to accept a character changing their iconic look but editor Nick Lowe has a good point. Spider-Woman has moved beyond being a simple superhero. She hasn't been one for some time. When you look at her in comics such as SECRET AVENGERS, while the art looks great, she still seems a little out of place in her traditional outfit.

As for why the character is so complex, check out our 3-Minute Expert video that attempts to capture everything about her.

The new costume will appear in her regular series. USA Today reports that beginning with SPIDER-WOMAN #5 (drawn by Javier Rodriguez), Jessica will focus more on street-level threats in New York City. Ben Urich will play a bigger role in the series as well. With Jessica spending more time on the 'street-level,' it makes sense for her to have a costume that appears more...normal.

    No Caption Provided

The costume was designed by Kris Anka. To check out more of the new costume, look for Spider-Woman in the Spider-Man Unlimited game.

I can dig it. Another reason why they should have held off on the Spider-Woman series until after Spider-Verse.

Looks pretty cool. That spiderweb under her arms looks a bit corny/weird, but I like it overall. That first cover is awesome.

I assume at this point they just keep adding those weird spider-arm things because if it wasn't there it would just look like a long sleeved shirt.

@mr__kamikaze: Which is kind of why I'm the one guy who dislikes it. It's so bland. I prefer her classic costume personally. A better redesign of it I found would be this:

I get that the old costume was over sexualised, but it was iconic and striking. This is what? A jacket and a pair of glasses? Kinda dull.

I can't help but think they're cashing in on the Batgirl redesign. I'm not sure it fits her character but I'll wait until I see more pics until I give an opinion.

Just noticed the lack of boob size. I don't care she lost her bust but I thought it was funny they thought it necessary to make the effort to change.

Honestly I've always liked Jessicas costume. That said, this new redesign is enough in its same vein for it to not be a jarring change that I know 90% of us would, at first glance, be at odds with. I really like the secret agent emphasis. And it's designed by Anka?? Winner, winner, chicken dinner. The man has some serious talent.

I really enjoy that costumes are moving away from just being flashy suits and moving in the direction of being utility outfits for the characters respective abilities/ talents. That said, however, if they change Spider-Mans costume I'll lead the riot.

@garyjmatthews: Kind of what I was thinking too. This look's pretty dull, and feels too much like everyday clothes, which I hate on superheroes. I also didn't mind the sexy factor of the classic costume either.

I hope not. Nightcrawler's black and red costume is one of my favorites. Besides, he's already had a few redesigns here and there.

I have never been a fan of spandex for characters. I think it is simply the by-product of comic books coming out so long ago, and superman being modeled after the "strongmen" of the circus shows.

Now, unfortunately, people seem to be afraid to move away from it...mostly because of the fans.

Just look at all the people who never wanted Superman to lose his red underwear in the movies. Seriously...red underwear...and these fans couldn't go without it. That's absurd to me.

Spandex are also highly impractical for combat use.

I say this for both female and male characters.

I never saw it as our version of spandex as we know it. I saw it as other material with the same name. Most people I know think the same. I don't believe that is the motive anyway.

The main reason why classic superhero outfits looked unique is because nobody wears full body spandex with underwear on the outside. It's time for more classic character designs to be updated to something modern. I like the new design because it looks like something someone would actually wear in a pseudo-realistic world.
