No the better solution and even more controversial is that Peter Parker is actually crazy, lost his marbles and really thinks he's Octavius. In reality it's a mental breakdown. Doc Oct really died and Spider-Man thinks he's Oct, but really isn't. So it's really really Peter Parker doing all the shitty, superior stunts right now!
