This is it.The end.
Plot
Kaine and Aracely take down bad guys as a team in Mexico and flash back to what happened in Houston after last issue’s cliffhanger. Basically everyone fell out of the building but Kaine saved them with a big web, but then Shathra attacked and Kaine mutated into his monstrous “The Other” form to fight her. After his friends had seen him like that they all recoiled except Aracely, who knew his other form, and the two left together. They are now in Mexico looking for her parents and randomly meeting coyotes who like to say “Mictlan rises.”...(what was THAT about?!) Fade out on our heroes on the beach with a margarita.
Thoughts
I haven't seen an issue like that,im my whole life.Excellent writing is met with production errors, that really exceeds expectations,in a weird way....
The biggest, most glaring and distracting errors in this issue come in the scene when everyone is falling from the building and Kaine’s trying to save them.Aracely’s name is misspelled as “Arecely” twice in one page. She is evidently in two places at once when Kaine’s narration reads “Arecely is closest, then Wally. Arecely and Annabelle, they’re too far away.” Aracely is actually in his arms for the second sentence when he says she’s too far away.......(uh-huh...)
The writing is severely better in this,in comparison with other issues where Burnham co-wrote.This leads me to think that most of the job was done by Chris Yost. Also it's his kind of writing,in most of the pages."My name is Kaine..." ....good humour, and good timing of it.....some qualities i find only in Brian Bendis's writing nowadays...
The flashback style they chose for the issue, may had not worked,as i was afraid so,after reading the first pages, but it did, accually, preety well. The feeling that is implanted is that Houston is over, for Kaine.....it doesn't matter anymore,it's done. And that's a good thing,a propper vibe for a last issue. You don't feel that he could have done something more that he did.Just things didn't work out.
One more thing is that,a lot of events-plot was crammed into a few pages.I read it twice to understand everything, and how it went down.
My favorite part of the issue was the scenes where Kaine and Aracely interact.Yost really knocks it out of the park, with those two.It is a true joy to read their dialog, and it is,wheather intended or not,a father-daughter relashionship.
We get two more big teases to the Aztec hell subplot that’s been running with Aracely for the entire series, though, and that feels odd considering this is the end.Probably a ''promise'' for New Warriors, where Kaine and Aracely continue their journey......yeah,Aracely is in this too....everyone were concentrating,so much,on Kaine, that forgot Aracely was in the book too.
The art by mr. Baldeon is unimpressive. It serves its cause, but it is not anything special.
Concidering it is the final issue,a propper move would be to bring Stagman back......just a thought....
Decent finale,to a book that has been low,for the last months. Will miss it though.
