super_man_23's Samurai Jack #9 - Villainous Vortex review

Why does this series feel like it'll never end?

Jack vs. a evil creation of Aku. A story element that could've been substituted for something else; or begin to ADD to Samurai Jack finally defeating Aku!

    The Good

One thing that Jim Zub does right with this series is the tone. Part of the credit does go to the art team too; but how Jim Zub sets up each issue, greatly resembles the TV show's overall tone. Giving that sense of a one man vs. the world type of tone. Zub should be applauded for making it look like the TV Show, even though he's working only with sight; instead of hearing as well. (Like what the TV show did with the seeing and hearing, to give a full immersive experience.) It's good to see that kind of creativity channeled into a comic book series; and should be used more often when tackling a praised hit TV Show turned comic book!

The artwork was fantastic! Artist Ethan Beaver and color artist Josh Bercham did a fantastic job at helping create the tone, and world, of Samurai Jack. Without their hand in this, it would be a pretty dull experience!

    The Bad

While Jim Zub does do a good job at capturing the Samurai Jack TV series tone, this issue's story fails to live up to the TV series. Zub's story for this issue makes it feel, to me at least, that he's writing like this series is never going to end. Even though issue ten will be the final issue for this series. Knowing the last issue of this series, does, take away from the stories that are leading to this series closure. So reading about Samurai Jack fighting a evil robot, created by Aku to destroy Jack; makes me scratch my head because I'm questioning if issue ten really is the end. Or if Jim Zub didn't get the "okay" for being signed to more issues for this series, solely because this series doesn't seem to be doing well. It's baffling and sad, but that stuff happens. I really want this series to end well, but that's me just staying positive in the situation.

    The Verdict

This series captures the tone of Samurai Jack, but fails to make stories that are meaningful or live up to the Samurai Jack TV series. With this being the second to the last issue, it'll take a miracle for Jim Zub to save this series and close it properly for Samurai Jack fans. 1 out of 5. Until the final issue!
