Back in August we first reported that AMC was looking at bringing Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead to a television near you.  I am now happy to report that a pilot for the show has been given a greenlight.  Image has announced that the series by Kirkman and Charlie Adlard will be brought to life.

"THE WALKING DEAD's road to the small screen has been a long one, but so far it's looking like the best of all worlds," creator and writer Robert Kirkman said. "Given AMC's track record with shows like 'Madmen' and 'Breaking Bad,' combined with Frank Darabont writing and directing, I couldn't possibly be more excited for this to come together. Having the pilot greenlit is a huge leap forward to this becoming a reality."

The series made its debut in 2003 and the 69th issue will be in stores next week.  The Walking Dead is a 32-page black and white comic that's priced at $2.99.  The plans for the AMC adaption is to closely follow the storylines in the monthly comic.

While it sounds like the series is moving forward, we can see that only the pilot episode has been greenlit.  Hopefully it's just a formality and the actual series will continue as well.  When I first heard the series was being planned at AMC, I was a little surprised.  But the channel has been proving itself with its recent shows.  Do you think the show will be successful on television?  Who do you think should be cast as the lead character, Rick Grimes?

this. . .. is . . .. AWESOME!!!. . . . . I can't wait to check it out. . . . Good question about Grimes, I'm going to have to ponder that one for a bit. My first thought is the guy who played the dad/cop on Twilight - but that's just me. . .

Is this the best thing to come around in a very long time. Not only am I excited for this show but maybe...maybe its success will make HBO serious about greenlighting Preacher with the right team involved.

I like Robert Kirkman a lot but I never really got into The Walking Dead. I think it's just I'm tired of zombies. I doubt I'll watch this.

YES! i have been reading TPBs of Walking Dead for weeks (picked up 10 and 11 yesterday), and this is soooo freaking awesome.  I love WD becuase it takes a step away from everyone elses zombie story, and plays mostly on the horrors of a world lost instead of the zombies themselves.
my only concern about this show is that if it comes to pass, the show could quickly catch up to the comic. I kinda hope they make it a mini series. Cuz you know how tv is....

Doesn't AMC make Breaking Bad? Makes you wonder how mature the series will wind up being.

Breaking Bad is hardcore, there should be no problem with The Walking Dead. And even if it's censored on Tv, the episodes on DVD won't be.

Since it will be Tv it will be a TV actor. I always thought the guy who played sawyer in Lost would be good. If he can play a more straight up cop then a sneeky sly guy.

Big time Walking Dead fan. One of my top 10 comic book series. So of course I'm happy to see this made into a show than a movie. Makes logical sense. Though I always felt that HBO or Showtime would've been a more suitable network  to have Walking Dead on. Mostly due to the graphic nature of the book. With the gory death scenes that happen in the book, the mature language, & of course the nudity and sex parts of the book. So I'm curious on how much they're gonna water it down.  So whenever I catch a rerun of the Sopranos on AMC it feels off when they cut out the R-rated stuff. lol

Mad Men/Walking Dead crossover needs to happen. I don't care about the logistics. It just needs to happen.

I really like this book, i just hope that they keep it in the same tone of what happens.
Also i hope the look of it is either black and white or very sub-dued colours kind of like a sapia tone from RE5

they could actually water it down a lot and still keep the integrity of the book....if you think about the book isn't about the violence and nudity...they could probably take those things out of the book and it would be fine

Yes! This is great news and with Darabont involved I have nothing but good faith in this (potential) series.

It's about time this comic got a TV show but I think it would be better on HBO or Showtime.

It's about damn time. The Walking Dead is comic book writing at it's best. Now we just need someone to adapt a screenplay for Invincible, which started about the same time and is just as enjoyable to read.

    @danhimself:
This is true maybe with the nudity but the violence in the book displays how humans devolve into their savage natural instincts in order to survive with what's going on. Which is normal for people to do when chaos happens. Not just with the zombies being the threat but with other surviors . The book also deals with greed, rape, murder and power like with the guy who called himself the Governor who showed what he would do to achieve whatever he wanted. So like I said the violence is kind of a huge factor in Walking Dead. Not saying is what makes the book so great. For me it's the journey the surviors and how the make it in this chaotic situation dealing the zombies & other people who may try to harm them. But when you got a character like Michonne who pardon my french , is one tough bitch similar to the bride in Kill Bill. It's hard to censor a character like her.
