Wonder Woman #15 - The Burden of God

5

It's the 'New Gods' versus the 'Old Gods' when Wonder Woman meets Orion.

The Good

Orion and Wonder Woman collide, and readers are finally given a hint at the marriage between the "New Gods" and the "Old Gods" in this new DC Universe thanks to this latest issue of WONDER WOMAN #15 by Brian Azzarello. First, let's start with the issue's art by Cliff Chiang. This issue features one of the most brilliant covers this week, depicting Wonder Woman as she prepares to strike; all of which is seen in the reflection of Orion's helmet. It's a beautiful image that really plays up Chiang's skill at toying with perspectives. When we open to the first page, we see a collection of small panels, each one zooming in on a specific object. It is, once again, a great example of perspective and it's really beautifully executed by Cliff Chiang.

The story is equally as beautiful as its art. 'New Gods' fans might notice that Orion has had a costume re-design. His costume looks a lot more modern and the Motherbox appears to be considerably streamlined, which is great.

The issue itself is very well written. In this story readers learn gather rather quickly that Orion has information that pertains to the sons and daughter of Zeus -- in one of the last few pages it is revealed that he is on a search for the "last of the line," and the situation (on his end) seems rather dire. I loved the set-up that we see in this issue. We're given clues and Azzarello alludes to the "bigger picture," but it's unclear just exactly what the the purpose of Orion's visit to Earth, is. Having said that, if you ever wanted to see what would happen in a fight between Orion and Wonder Woman, stay tuned.

The Bad

It's hard to say anything bad about this issue as it is, in my opinion, one of the better issues of Wonder Woman.

The Verdict

I loved this issue. I loved the art, the way the panels were laid out, the way that Azzarello brought the story to a steady climax, and the interactions between all of the different characters. I love seeing that Hera and Zola aren't that different after-all, and it's great seeing their characters unfold in the issue. While action fans may be a bit disappointed with this issue, the build-up of the story is worth it and is guaranteed to leave you wanting more. Although a lot has happened, and this has been one very long, continuous story, I do believe it's easy enough to follow and I highly recommend picking up this issue. I know that I for one absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next!

Theres a million of things wrong with the issue.

1.The main plot WW of Orion fighting barley even happens.

2.The inept sub plots that took us nowhere. Like the hotel scenes

3.The art in general was bland and uninspired .A lot missed details in the faces.

I don't get how this gets 5 out of 5 either. It's all dragging and just intros again and is WW even in it much? Seems more Gods jostling with WW for page time in her own book.

In issue #14 of Wonder Woman, Diana only appeared on 8 of the 20 pages. While I did not buy issue #15, I did flip through it at my comic shop this morning and she only appears on 11 of the 20 pages.

Wonder Woman has been better developed in Justice League than her solo book. Geoff Johns' portrayal of Wonder Woman and her world is a lot closer to what I enjoy from Wonder Woman. Since the beginning of JL he's:

1.) Established that Steve Trevor's crash on Paradise Island is what brought Diana to man's world.

2.) Positioned Steve as the DC equivalent of Nick Fury as the head of A.R.G.U.S. which I think was a very smart move.

3.) Developed Diana's relationship w/Steve.

4.) Introduced the Cheetah, carving out her origin and revealing that she is either an identity thief or an identity-hopper, having gone by the names of Priscilla Rich, Deborah Domaine, Barbara Minerva, etc.

5.) Given us glimpses at Etta Candy and Giganta.

Have I missed anything?

I think Geoff should relaunchSensation Comicsand focus on the non-mythological aspects of Wonder Woman's world including introducing Donna Troy and revamping Diana's existing rogues gallery for modern times.

I have been a Wonder Woman fan since the late 70s. She quickly became one of my top 3 favorite heroes(along with Hal Jordan and Black Vulcan). While Wonder Woman has had a sorted history as far as the direction of her solo book has gone, I've found the current run to be the most dis-interesting of all. While it's a given that Wonder Woman should have ties to Greek mythology given her origin and roots, the current book reads like the Olympian pantheon are the main characters with Diana as simply a supporting character to them.Plus, her familiar supporting cast and villains are nowhere to be seen in her solo title. Steve Trevor, Etta Candy, and the Cheetah had to be introduced in Justice League. That certainly didn't happen with Iris Allen, Perry White, or Black Manta.

I think this story is interesting but I have to admit it we are getting a burgeoning cast that is over powering the star of the book. She is not driving her narrative at all. I read Chiang said they even wanted Scott and Barda here. Look, please tell them write a New Gods book if the New Gods is what making them enthused. Let Orion do whatever he has come here to do and send him on his way and write that book. They have made Wonder Woman into Diana the God Slayer ignoring all the iconic elements/ decades of history etc with no effort to making making her connect with the outside world. They left that for Johns to do and how much can he really do? It's not good when Diana's page time keeps getting contracted or she's just sitting around in hotels discussing stuff or just meeting new gods. Azzarello needs to shift some gears. It's lucky the Gods are interesting characters why we can tolerate it but I shouldn't have to be reading the Gods as more interesting than Diana after 15 issues. It irks me a little when people who did not care to pick up WW before suddenly like WW because Gods and their politics is not what WW is soley all about.

@Power_Guy: Sorry, dude. I disagree immensely. First of all, the fact that you didn't read it says a lot. You're immediately thinking in a quantitative mindset by simply counting Wonder Woman points instead of looking at the quality of the book overall and whether or not this is indicative of the series as a whole.

Geoff Johns' portrayal of Wonder Woman (up until maybe this past issue) has been terrible. I love Johns' stuff and I think his Justice League series is quite entertaining, not good but entertaining, but his portrayal of Wonder Woman is a joke. It's a caricature, essentially a female version of Thor. All she cares about is fighting. Extremely two dimensional (again, until the recent Cheetah arc), similar to his depiction of most of the characters which is probably a common problem with big team books.

I agree about Sensation Comics, though. I definitely don't think it should be led by Johns. First of all, he's already going to be doing 4 titles as sole writer in February. I also would point to my aforementioned problems with her characterization.

I didn't read this current issue but I've read issues 1 through 5 and 14. The reason I didn't read any of the others is because this book called "Wonder Woman" is not focused on Wonder Woman but, instead, the Greek pantheon. Not only have the pantheon stolen the spotlight from Diana but they've also taken up story that could have been devoted to Wonder Woman's known supporting cast and rogues. I read DC Comics to read about DC characters, not characters from Greek myth. Granted, some non-DC characters should occasionally appear in the comics but to have a book feature said characters in the same amount as one of DC's own tends to make Wonder Woman look less than worthy of having her name on the cover of the book.

As for your comparison of Wonder Woman to Thor, that's exactly what I see going on in Wonder Woman, not Justice League. It's all gods, almost all of the time in Wonder Woman. In Justice League, we've seen various sides of Diana such as when she showed her deep feelings for Steve during the Graves' arc, compassion for the Cheetah, and her new crush(?) on Superman.

As for the quality of Wonder Woman's solo book, Azzarello seems to be giving readers a one-trick-pony with his heavy reliance on the gods and perverting Diana's mythos by turning the Amazons, who were once shining examples of feminine achievement, into man-killing, baby-trading savages. Chiang's designs for many of the pantheon look uninspired and cheap. Strife looks like Britney Spears when she shaved her head, Hermes has chicken feet, Poseidon resembles an inexpensive stuffed animal from Wal-mart, while Hades looks like someone smashed a birthday cake on top of his head. Chiang's depiction of Diana is inconsistent at best. One panel featuring her looks great while the next looks rushed and cartoony. Don't even get me started on how poor the art looks when Akins fills in....

If you're enjoying the book called "Wonder Woman", I'm happy for you but this book isn't "Wonder Woman" to me which is why I suggested that DC relaunches Sensation Comics with a more straight-up superhero approach for Diana. I've tried 6 issues of Azzarello's run and I won't waste my money on another.

I can't wait to see what this Hera business is all about. This is the Goddess that "Killed" all of the Amazons . . . and Diana is babysitting her? Zola should have walked out of there the minute it was suggested that they all live together like it was summer camp. It's really ridiculous.

It's a wonder that Diana hasn't snapped and beheaded Hera by now. I'm guessing that Diana is waiting to figure out how to restore Hera's power so that she can undo what has been done to the Amazons.

I've been enjoying this series very much (at least when Chiang is the artist, I don't like the fill-in artists), but I do agree that it doesn't focus on WW as much as you'd expect in a normal solo title.  But that's fine with me, really; I've never read Wonder Woman before and this series has pulled me in to do so, so they're doing something right, in my view.

1. Didn't read any solicits or spoilers for this issue but I never got the feeling the plot was about a fight. Not seeing WW and Orion fight that much is a good thing because it's a damn overused cliche.

2. Inept sub plots? The hotel scenes? You mean CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?

3. Imo the art is just that, inspired. It totally fits the mood of a story about Greek Gods. It's grainy and the colors aren't glossy.

I know Wonder Woman is Diana's own solo book and comparing it to the Justice League is iffy...but since you did it, so will I. While Diana might not have a big page count on her own book, she's still has presence and character in the book. That's not what we've been getting in the Justice League book at all apart from the last couple of issues. The Diana we've seen has been an ice princess who pretty much loses her cool in an instant, attacking team members and going about her business solo and not accepting the help of her team...which is the complete opposite of WW on her own book where Diana is a competent, smart, and caring person.

As much as I like Geoff Johns, he can't write Wonder Woman at all. You always get the feeling he has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to Diana, portraying her in bad light.

1-3) All of this is done mostly from Steve's POV. We don't get to see much of Diana's views on the matters because she barely utters a sentence in the JL much like Superman.

4) We didn't get any real connection with Diana and Cheetah just a lot of exposition during their fight scenes. On Wonder Woman we actually see Diana's relationship with Zola, Lennox and even Hera now. With Cheetah, Johns just has the two fighting and then lamenting on some lost friendship we never got to see (and thus not care).

5) Eh, if the two characters aren't going to be central, it's not really nothing to write home about. They're just established Wonder Woman characters.

Wonder Woman and Greek mythology go hand in hand. If you separate the two it can come off as if Batman was fighting in broad daylight in Metropolis.

You didn't see much of Diana's view on Steve but I saw that she cared for him deeply. It really shook her up when Steve's life was in jeopardy. I also think she's gotten more development in Justice League than her team members given that Justice League introduced Steve, Etta, and the Cheetah along with putting her in the midst of a new romance with Superman and the likelihood that she will be taking on the Diana Prince ID in the near future in Justice League. The kind of disappointing thing is that most of these things should have already happened in Wonder Woman's solo book but instead, we get something along the lines of a soap opera featuring the Olympians. I just don't get why Azzarello has to rely on the Olympians so heavily being that they aren't even exclusive DC characters. Marvel, Image, Dark Horse or any other comic company can give us a comic featuring the Olympians which waters down the appeal of them stealing the spotlight in Wonder Woman. I'd rather see DC Comics focused on DC characters. I totally understand that the Olympians should have a presence in Wonder Woman's world but at the same time, she, her supporting cast, and rogues shouldn't have to play 2nd fiddle to them.

1. Rage

2. Despair

I cant tell you how much I disagree with everything you just said here. Going straight up superhero is exactly what this book and character DOESN'T need

What makes you say that? I know that there are readers who are enjoying Azzarello's run but I also know several former Wonder Woman readers who are not reading the book because of the over-use of mythology and/or the changes Azzarello has made to the character/book. Many of them have said that they would start buying the book again once Azzarello leaves or would be willing to read a 2nd Wonder Woman book that has a more straight-up superhero approach that was not written by Brian.
