Wolverine & the X-Men #11 - Got Hope?

4

Will Wolverine really have it in him to kill Hope if she is taken over by the Phoenix Force? This issue deals with that very topic.

The Good

After opening up a school dedicated in loving memory of one of the most important people in his life, Logan has been striving to give mutant kids a place where they can call their home. So the idea that Logan would be the one that would eliminate Hope because she was said to be the vessel for the Phoenix Force seems like a contradiction. And to be honest, this is actually something I questioned a lot when reading the AVX story arc. Would Wolverine have it in him to actually kill Hope? I think the best part about this issue is that Jason Aaron deals with this possibility. Wolverine is the best at what he does, but does that mean he would actually kill Hope?

This isn't the only issue we see Aaron deal with in this book. Kid Gladiator is also whisked away and embarks on a journey back to his Shi'ar home planet. Whether he actually makes it home is another matter entirely. Aaron also throws in some action packed moments alluding to the AVX story where Iceman has to fight Red Hulk. There are some great scenes in this issue and it gives the reader a great idea of where the school and the kids are in relation to this conflict.

The Bad

I really love this series, but I do think that having some of those action scenes thrust into the center of the story did make it feel a bit off. Sure it was great to see where the characters stand in this big battle between the X-Men and the Avengers, but it felt slightly out of place in a book that has been mainly about the school and its students. This one just didn't quite flow as smoothly, in my opinion, as the other books have in the series.

The Verdict

Although there have been better books in this series, this one was still a solid read. Sure it wasn't as great as the last issue, but it did have some redeeming qualities. I liked seeing Kid Gladiator in this issue; I felt that he really showed his true colors. Does he really hate the school, or deep down does he love his school and the kids he met there? It was really sweet. Jason Aaron also dealt with whethor or not it's in character for Wolverine to be the one to eliminate Hope if it called for it, and that was definitely interesting. Once again, beautiful art by Nick Bradshaw, Norman Lee and some very vibrant and beautiful colors by Justin Ponsor. Another great issue of WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN.

I really enjoyed this issue! Although the fight between Iceman and Red Hulk was small I really enjoyed when Kid Gladiator shows up knocking the Red Hulk on his ass! I always liked Kid Gladiator and now I like him more!

Man, every AvX tie-in I read just makes the main title even worse. How does that even happen? How could every single side-story possibly be far superior to the central plot? Marvel, once again, finds a way

I actually didn't like this issue all that much. I did like a few things. Honestly I think the book should ditch wolverine all together and if you must have a tie in to AvX then do it from the schools perspective only.

i just think the scheduling of all the AVX issues is atrocious. the last main series issue came out about 2 weeks ago, and we just learn why wolverine decided to do that? idk it just takes away from it a bit.

I liked this issue a lot. At first I didn't like the added fight with Wolverine and Hope, but I liked it's consequences on Wolverine's character, so it was all good. I wish we could've seen more Rulk vs Iceman though!

I love this series, but for someone who's also reading the actual AvX, I'm tired of all the crossovers. Still a decent read, looking forward to more character development from both Kid Gladiator and Wolverine. Every time he talks to Jean's statue it makes me wanna cry./:

IMO, this issue was boring. It was filled with either pointless action scenes that most people have already seen, or hardcore Wolverine jerking. I know Aaron was trying to justify Wolverine's action in AvX, but it didn't work for me. This book has been going downhill the past few issues, while Uncanny X-Men has surprisingly improved.

Bendis is how

That's the thing, this is a Jason Aaron penned title, and he did issues 2 and 3 of AvX, which were by far the worst offenders. Hickman's issue was only slightly better, but hardly worth his time. I'm just not buying into it at all, and wish i could just close my eyes and make it go away

I still think Bendis is to blame somehow..........anyway after the monstrosity that was the first issue I just closed my eyes and said lalalala I'm not listening, this isn't happening lalala it's just a bad dream. I suggest you do the same

I have never been a fan of Wolverine but I have always understood why people like him. Unfortunately, I think this whole AvX story has really made him pretty unlikeable. The one thing about Wolverine that people tend to gravitate towards is how honest and loyal he is. Promising to help Hope and then selling her out to the Avengers is potentially one of the douchiest things since Iron Man's antics in Civil War. While Captain America and Cyclops are being spun as Alpha Male pricks; Wolverine has become a lying dirtbag. I think Marvel has some work to do to undo the damage they've done to three of their biggest characters. While this issues tries to undo some of the damage to Wolverine's image by explaining his douche-baggery, I think it only reinforces the fact that he should be sticking with his people. Bros before Heroes or something like that.

He does what needs to be done.
And he does it so people don't have to be a monster like he is.
Doesn't mean it's an honorable thing betraying his friends and attempting to kill a child...but hes trying to save the world.

I would rather him do what he thought was best rather than just be a great follower.

Loved this issue. The Kid Gladiator and school scenes were fun while the focus on Wolverine and the question of whether or not he could kill Hope was pretty good. Not the best issue of the book, but probably the best of the tie-in issues its had so far.

See -- that's the thing. I don't see Wolverine intending to kill Hope as ooc, she asked him to long ago. And as for "selling" her out to the Avengers, I considered that clever and not in any way betraying mutantkind. The Phoenix is a horrific entity, and Wolverine is on the side of preventing this malicious force from destroying the world. Letting some 16 year old kid attempt to rein it in doesn't make any sense.

Having said that, I can see how people who don't follow Wolverine as fanatically as I do would feel he's some back-stabbing, child-killing psycho.

Then by that logic, he should have murdered Rachel Summers years ago. I guess its lucky for her that she spent most of her time overseas with Excalibur. Rachel was the host for the Phoenix for a number of years. I've heard the argument too that she could handle it because she was raised in a hellish future. Hope was raised by Cable IN THE FUTURE to be a near perfect soldier, so you can't tell me that she is any less suited to host the Phoenix than Rachel was.

@The Black Hood:

Hope specifically asked Wolverine to kill her should the Phoenix take over. Rachel did not make that request, so I don't get your logic. Also, this has nothing to do with Rachel or Hope's capability of controlling the Phoenix due to the environment they were raised in (which is a fair enough point for you to make). Bishop was adamant Hope was the reason for the destruction of mutantkind. Rachel was never considered a threat in such a scale.

I am pointing out what has transpired in the books -- why Wolverine tried to kill Hope when she striked out at him with Phoenix-like powers and also concerns expressed by the Avengers as to why they feel Hope would not be able to handle the Phoenix. But I do appreciate what you are saying.
