Thor: God of Thunder #17 - The Accursed Part Five of Five: The God Who Saved the Elves

5

Thor makes a stand against Malekith, but what happens to the League of Realms?

The Good

Issue #17 is being called "the grand finale" to The Accursed and it most definitely is "grand." It may not be as explosive or as visually impressive as Gorr's finale, but writer Jason Aaron does tremendous work with the script. It's truly praiseworthy stuff. This issue managed to bring out a whole slew of emotions. I was shocked, laughed like a fool a couple of times, elated like a goof, and even found myself moved by one character's fate. This story -- especially the last issue -- left us with more than a few questions and thankfully, Aaron makes sure they're all answered. It's all cleverly handled and full of great moments. I kept wondering about one element but Aaron wisely saved it for the epilogue and man, it's a superb tease.

Look, we all know there's just no topping a fight like Thors vs. Gorr, but this finale is still a total blast and legitimately gripping from beginning to end. It may not be filled with explosions that would make Michael Bay drop his jaw, but it's sheer fun nonetheless. Malekith's use of magic remains enthralling and the turn of events is riveting. It's absolutely a fight worthy of a finale.

The Bad

The only real downside here is the inconsistent artwork. There's two artists and two colorists and the change in quality really stands out from page to page. It's never necessarily bad looking, but it never really impresses, either.

The Verdict

Jason Aaron defies expectations in this finale and the result is brilliant. It's not only a satisfying close to this story, but also a totally exciting tease for what's to come. The only negative is how much the art fluctuates from page to page. Aside from that, this is a wonderful and thrilling issue. I've said it before and I'll say it again: THOR: GOD OF THUNDER is easily one of Marvel's most entertaining books. If you're not a Thor fan, odds are this'll turn you into one.

“Lo, there do I see my father.
Lo, there do I see my mother,
and my sisters, and my brothers.
Lo, there do I see the line of my people,
Back to the beginning!
Lo, they do call to me.
They bid me take my place among them,
In the halls of Valhalla!
Where the brave may live forever!”

100% agreed.

Hope the next arc is better. This one wasn't bad per say...but nothing compared to the first two

I really love the covers, but it feels like it's often Thos clashing against a villain on every cover.

Like every Aaron book. The first two-three arc are very good and then it's horrible.

Why was this Horrible?

Tho I agree, most of the time that's the case with Aaron.

It wasn't horrible, but it was underwhelming. It's probably the beginning of the horribleness.

Absolutly five stars, but that change of direction at the end, throw me off a little bit. I am hoping for a most epic arc next.

I love how bitter sweet the ending was. This is why Thor needs Loki.
