The Wolverine

3

James Howlett returns in his second solo film, but is it worth seeing in theaters?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine wasn't a film many of us enjoyed and despite it having a totally different director and set of writers, the previous movie has cast a rather ugly shadow over The Wolverine. Luckily for us, Logan's second film is definitely better than his first, but that isn't saying a lot, is it?

The Wolverine picks up after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand. In case you missed it, Wolverine was forced to kill Jean Grey. Plunging his claws into the woman he loved has taken a huge toll on him, forcing him to go into isolation and while he lives in the wild, he strives to avoid conflict. Logan may be an outcast, but one person wants to bring him back into society. Yashida, a man Wolverine saved during World War II, is now dying and wants to give his savior a gift: mortality. Wolverine is flown to Tokyo to hear the dying man's offer and to say any more would be too spoilery, so I'll cut the recap there.

The plot is loosely based on Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's 1982 four-issue series which is simply titled WOLVERINE. And when I say "loosely," I sure do mean it. Yes, it involves a lot of the same names and some scenes are blatantly inspired by the book, but it's massively different. I'm usually cool when it comes to most changes -- after all, they need to keep things fresh -- but they missed quite a few opportunities when it came to some of the more iconic moments from the book (there's a major tease early on but it never delivers the scene you're expecting). Additionally, I didn't appreciate the handling of a certain character. That's sure to only annoy a select few, but it's a character I'm really fond of, so sue me. And naturally, these complaints won't matter if you haven't read the classic series or share my passion for a certain Marvel character.

The story being drastically different than the source material is something I can overlook a vast majority of the time, but the problem here is the new narrative it creates feels like it's striving to be way more complex than it actually is. There's more than a handful of twists thrown our way, but the issue is none of them are actually shockers and I imagine most of you will be able to predict them well before they happen. A generic plot isn't a terrible thing if other factors can outweigh it, but it's worth noting because there's a fair share of moments I thought were downright silly -- the final act in particular had a few. Much to my surprise, there's an awesome amount of humor in the film, too. There's plenty of big laughs to enjoy, so even if you're not all that fond of the plot, odds are this movie will manage to slap a smile on your face a couple of times.

The Wolverine really succeeds when it decides to focus solely on Wolverine's internal struggle. Thankfully, there's a good chunk of that in the movie. Once again, Hugh Jackman does a superb job with the role, delivering the perfect blend of heart and rage. One moment you want to tell him everything will be alright and give him a pat on the back, and the next, you want to keep a safe distance from him or run as far away as you can. The more serious scenes are never enough to get the waterworks going, but it's certainly heartfelt enough at times and that's thanks to Jackman's performance. So if the plot does one thing very well, it would be its handling of the most popular X-Man and how he develops as the journey continues.

While Jackman steals the show and rightfully has a vast majority of the focus, Young Yashida's actor, Ken Yamamura, comes in second place for a short yet strong emotional performance in the opening scene and another flashback. Everyone else does an able job with their roles, too -- even if it is a super campy villain (here's looking at you, Viper).

Earlier action scenes suffer from too much shaky cam (and I'm someone who can usually tolerate a very good amount of that) and it really detracts from the chaos. This movie needs to bring good melees and unfortunately, it misses the mark in some of the early fights. I get the movie can't be too gory and a Wolverine movie certainly doesn't need gore to be good, but it's awkward watching him slice and stab so many goons without any kind of visible damage occurring to them most of the time. That said, they do counter this a few times with some pretty cool shots of blood still on his claws and the aftermath of a door he stabbed through. Additionally, Wolverine is more vicious when it comes to his handling of certain people he encounters, but those actions often take place right outside of our view. Regardless, I'm just happy they occurred, even if we couldn't technically see it.

Director James Mangold delivers big time when Logan finally faces off against a certain character from Claremont/Miller's story. It was without question the best scene the film had to offer and one of Logan's best action scenes yet. For a moment, I thought to myself, "why aren't Wolverine's claws slicing through those swords?" But then I immediately thought, "Shut up and enjoy the best action scene, stupid." (To be fair, they did say they were stockpiling adamantium, so maybe some went to those blades?) And the bullet train sequence? The final cut has better editing than the previously released clip and, despite it being all kinds of ridiculous, it has some truly fun moments that'll likely make the audience erupt in laughter. It's just too bad the finale doesn't have anything on par with these two scenes, but regardless, the two are indeed really enjoyable.

Honestly, 3D isn't worth it unless you want a tad more depth to Jackman's ridiculously jacked body (I wonder how many 3D tickets that line just sold?). The 3D comes off as an afterthought and never added much to the experience. So if you're going to buy a ticket this weekend, I highly recommend saving a few bucks and checking it out in 2D.

If you've been optimistic about the trailers and clips, check this out and hopefully you can pretend this is the only Wolverine solo film that exists. Odds are you won't fall in love with it, but you'll probably dig it way more than his first effort. It does a solid job handling the character and provides at least two crowd-pleasing action scenes. That said, it does also suffer from a pretty weak overall plot and has some fairly questionable moments, especially towards the end. The Wolverine isn't a very bad movie -- it's just not a very good one, either.

Oh, and there is a mid-credits scene and yes, it is ABSOLUTELY worth waiting for. You'll definitely want to stick around for it.

@thetimestreamer: Since when does someone need to write an essay? You do realize all that time you just spent on that post could have been spent saying why you like or dislike the movie, right? Could literally be as easy as saying the pros and cons. Just pointing that out.

@k4tzm4n: i, for one, am not getting paid to do review (no matter how bad my opinion is). you are. so no i am not going to waste my time. and this trend of 'well you just posted blah blah but didnt write a 4 page essay to support it' is pointless. at the end of the day, you will like or dislike a movie no matter how well someone applies logic to prove that you should/shouldnt. taste can NOT be swayed by logic. you can be made to see it's awful sure, but you will still like it. and the opinion of the common man does not interest me. there's a saying in my country: if everybody is jumping off a bridge, should you? most people dont think things through or get swept in the hype or peer presure or whatever. so ok, dude, this is how ultimately ends so i'll skip to the end: i dont like your movie reviews, we disagree, the end. hope you have better taste in comics.

What the heck is wrong with people? He gave it a 3/5 that's not horrible. That's not amazing, that's not the best movie of all time, but that's respectable. But reading comments you'd think he gave the thing a one and that there wasn't a well written and concise explanation of the critic's reasoning written underneath. So I'm going to be that guy and say "What the heck people?" Have we all lost the ability to judge things on their merits backed by our own unique tastes and see what we agree or disagree with in someone's assessment of something?

This movie was actually better than IM3 and MOS. Great acting and action performances. Beautiful scenery. My only problems in the movie were bone claws and Viper in the third act.

@andy_117: but thats your opinion. Everyone I know, including me, is of the mind that Man of Steel is one of the best superhero movies to date. I saw it in theaters 6 times.

Wolverine on the other hand, was a massive let down that looked more than a TV pilot than a fully fledged big budget movie, with some of the worst action scenes I have ever seen in a superhero movie.

Saw it and liked it a lot. I personally found it to be much better than Man of Steel was.

Wolverine fans might complain about how it lacked violence that goes with the character and all but it should really come as no surprise. A movie released to the masses and that gets viewed by children who look up to heroes really wouldn't have all that so if for some reason you're expecting it, try not to be disappointed.

To the people commenting on the content of the review: you deserve a cookie. I don't care if you think my review is utter garbage and disagree on all points I've made, you're doing awesome work by talking about the movie and its pros/cons and not just how many stars it has.

To the people focused on scores: get over it. 3/5 = 6/10 = "okay," and I thought this movie was just okay. Want to know why? There's some words posted above which kind of explain that. And yes, I loved Man of Steel and believe it or not, that too had words explaining why. Just because you didn't means we won't see eye-to-eye on anything? Seems like an irrational conclusion to make, but you're free to think what you want, I suppose.

Additionally, if you're so focused on scores, you may want to know it currently has an average score of 6.3 on RT and a 59 on Metacritic. But... then again, this will probably go in one ear and out the other since I imagine the people who think scores mean everything are the same people who say "critics are stupid" when they disagree and "look at the scores it's getting!" when they agree.

All in all, just go see the movie and judge for yourself. If you love it, cool. If you hate it, cool. If you agree with me, cool. But no amount of QQ will change my score, will it?

But the AUDIENCE ratings on Metacritic is an 8 and an 81% on RT.

That post was in response to favorable press reviews being cited, sorry for not being clear. Ultimately, the final part of the quoted bit is the most important part of them all.

The fact that you think Hugh Jackman fits this role is your first problem.

He does. If you can ignore the fact he's 6' and not in the 5'-3" range. Which I can. Aside from the height discrepancy, he's a great Wolverine on the big screen.

I went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. It has something for everyone: if you want a hack-and-slashy kind of Wolverine, it's got that; if you want a deeper, more profound look at Logan, it has a nice existential crisis for him to deal with too. And to the people who claim Jackman's not a good fit for the character, this movie just reaffirmed for me that he is. I can't think of a superhero with better casting. Not even Iron Man, because that was honestly Marvel adapting the character to be more like Robert Downey Jr. than it was Marvel hiring Robert Downey Jr. because he could play Iron Man. Yukio and Mariko were great too. The only real grouses I had were Viper (hated every scene the character was in, over-the-top villainizing reminiscent of Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy) and Harada (his fate wasn't really handled in any way that made me care, and the changes made to his character aren't going to sit well with people who wanted the Silver Samurai). I honestly think this movie had a more coherent plot than Man of Steel did.

I'd give it a 4/5.

I honestly wasn't expecting much from this movie due to Wolvies last film outing. I'm actually now excited to see it, due to a lot of the positive reviews it's getting. With that said ill avoid the 3d due to it being an obvious cash grab with little actual need for it.

I absolutely loved it. It is by far the best Marvel movie Fox has put out. I also loved how respectful it was of Japan in general, as someone who lived there for over a decade. It was also pretty interesting how they decided to leave the vast majority of the spoken Japanese untranslated.

Also, dat end credit sequence!!!!

PG-13 Wolverine is bullshit!

If Fox really want to make a lot of money, suggest they do a bigger team up movie, make longer plans (like Avengers 2012)

@k4tzm4n: I respect your review K4tz, and I do agree this movie is freaking leagues above Origins. However, I'd give it a 4/5 or a 7.5/10. It easily was far better than I expected and I hate Wolverine. But that's just my opinion xD

Sidenote: Did you catch the part that Jean says to Logan that she is all alone. My friend and I hear that and thought "Wait, isn't Cyclops dead and with you?" So does that mean that Cyke is alive and out there somewhere?

PG-13 Wolverine is bullshit!

I take it you didn't hear that Mangold has gone on record to saying there will be a Unrated Cut for the blu-ray release with extra footage, and it is supposed to be bloodier?

@k4tzm4n: Just got back from seeing the movie. Spot on review. Hiroyuki Sanada has a great fight scene and never disappoints. Personally Robosamurai is going in the same trashcan as Dudpool from Origins. I refuse to acknowledge that thing as "The Silver Samurai".

As someone who didn't spit venom when the Mandarin reveal came up in Iron Man 3, I have to say that I personally found this the weakest comic book movie of the big 3 released so far. I still enjoyed it in parts, and would give it a lowish 3 star rating (maybe bordering on the 2). Jackman is always good value as Logan and the Japanese setting was rather unique (albeit filled with stereotypes about the local culture). However, the villains were pretty lame, with the Schumacher-esque Viper and the handling of that spoiler character. I also thought that the action was actually a bit of a letdown, with the more 'realistic' bits having annoying quick cut shakycam and the fantastical elements being hampered with bad CGI, which should not happen in a 2013 blockbuster.

This movie was surprisingly good. After a summer filled with characters having enormous world ending stakes it was nice to see something more a kin to a character piece. Mangold and Jackman really manage to capture The Wolverine in this film. best of all it dosen't feel like it's a part of a larger universe besides veiled hints and the fact that Jean Grey is taunting him all through out the movie. And well the post credits stinger which was eh.

I'd give it 4 out of five stars cause I believe it was impressive. A few duds but all the same really good. Hugh Jackman really has done Wolverine justice. Even though in the future someone else might assume the role, he has defined the portrayal of this character in such an uncanny yet awesome way.

Okay, come on people, this movie was NOT better than MOS, and only bearly better than IM3. It had a boring plot, boring fight scenes, bad pacing, the "Silver Samurai" was ridiculous, the romance between Logan and Mariko felt forced and unrealistic. Viper was mediocre at best, and the ending was bologna

I mean how the hell do you steal someone's healing factor??? What is he changing Logan's DNA?? Isn't that what makes him a mutant in the first place? Is he removing the X Gene??

And don't get me started on the useless Jean Grey dream sequences, they were pointless and added nothing to the movie.

This review is spot on it's a 3, and the ONLY reason it isn't lower is because of the awesome end credits scene which was without a doubt the best part of the film.

Well, no. I don't think The Wolverine is better than MOS and IM3 just because Wolverine is my favorite hero. I felt The Wolverine had a better story than IM3 and MOS, had a perfect mix of seriousness and comedy, it wasn't forced like IM3 and it wasn't depressing like MOS, I loved the portrayal of Japanese culture (a culture I am personally infatuated with), I liked the grittier, up close and personal fights that focused on martial arts instead of gratuitous explosions like IM3 and MOS, Jackman gave his best performance as Wolverine imo, he had the perfect mix of brooding and dry humor, and I loved the final credits scene that set up Days of the Future past. I was finally satisfied with a CBM this year after IM3 and MOS both struck for me.

And how can you criticize The Wolverine for having bad pacing, a forced relationship, and boring plot when MOS had all of those faults?

Considering Man of Steel got 5/5 and that movie was mediocre at best, I'm guessing we probably won't see eye to on this one either.

Yeah, this movie is much better than MoS.

Come on dude, you know it has a little to do with bias, I have yet to hear you say anything bad about anything Wolverine related. I agree that it was better than Iron Man 3, but then again, that's not saying much. The plot was boring and a bit convoluted with all of the double crosses and triple crosses going on. The changed important characters for the worse like Viper and Silver Samurai. The comedy in the film was almost non existent, Logan's relationship with Mariko was just boring and felt out of place. Someone ''Stealing'' his healing factor makes no sense, I mean it's in his DNA how do you take it?? And to further that, how the hell does taking someone's healing factor make the Samurai younger?? Jean was useless in the film and took up too much time they could focus on other things, and she was portrayed as she was when she was possessed by the Phoenix, if she was Logan's memory, why would he remember her like that?? It was better than the travesty that was Iron Man 3, but it was nowhere near as good as Man of Steel.

Well, yea, I enjoyed it a little more because it had my favorite character, but that was not a factor in my opinion. I wouldn't call Wolverine: Origins more than MOS just because it has Wolverine. I felt Jean added to the idea of Wolverine being haunted. Wolverine remembered Jean the way he did because that's how she was the last time he saw her in X Men 3. Mangold clearly stated that The Wolverine was supposed to be different from most CBMs, and to be more of a thriller. So all the twists and turns would be expected. I didn't pay attention to Wolverine's relationship with Mariko (as I do with all CBMs).

Plus, MOS had all the faults you had with The Wolverine. It had a stupid plot which saw the idea of Clark being Jesus Christ shoved down our throats, and stupid and forced relationship with Lois Lane.

Finally, you are watching a movie about a 200 year old warrior with claws and a healing factor. Someone stealing DNA should not come as a surprise in that type of world.

@k4tzm4n: Fair review of the movie, I'd personally downgrade it half a star to 2.5 (or 5/10) though. Simply because to me it was formulaic, predictable, and by the numbers. Some of the action I enjoyed, others not so much (flying train claw dive comes to mind). I didn't mind the change to Silver Samurai, but then again I didn't blow a gasket over the change to Mandarin either. I'm not saying they're better the way they were portrayed, but it doesn't bother me. I don't really have much to say about it because it was just so...okay. I liked Iron Man 3 a little more to be honest, but haven't seen Man of Steel so I can't make the comparison to that everyone is making. But what does that matter really? Because it's not Superman, not Iron Man, it's Wolverine. This is what I expected from a Wolverine movie, and it was far better than Origins. So yeah, it was ok.

Just my opinion. Everyone's entitled to theirs.

What I can't believe is that, with a budget in the high millions, why they couldn't afford to buy Famke Janssen a wig. JEAN GREY HAS RED HAIR, NOT BROWN!!!!!

Man of Steel didn't have a stupid plot, it had a great plot, and Zod was a great villain. The Superman is Jesus point wasn't forced down our throat at all, that's been a parallel for Superman since his creation. I do agree that Lois and Superman's relationship was forced however. I understand Logan was haunted by Jean, but really, one shot of him killing her from the last film is all you need, she appeared liek four times in this film, only to try and get him to commit suicide, it was a waste of time. And if he IS hallucinating her, why would he choose to remember her as the Phoenix instead of the woman he fell in love with? A movie having Twists is one thing, but come on, Harada is good, oh wait no, he's bad, no, no, he's good again!

And I accept a lot of fantasy in my superhero films...but stealing a healing factor makes no sense!! I can understand Rogue doing it, that's her power, but sticking needles through Logan's broken claws and pulling out his healing factor THEN using it to become younger??? WTF is that?? I will admit though, that the end credit scene put a smile on my face, and was to me the best part of the film.

Wolverine belongs in an Avengers movie or X-men movie even a Spider-Man Wolverine movie. He's a great character when he's part of a group but goes solo at some point.

As much as I love and respect Wolverine, I never thought he could carry a comic book or a movie on his own.

C'mon...MOS was superior to the Wolverine movies...combined. Let's be serious...

Just saw it. Really really wanted to enjoy it, but honestly, the movie fell short. More tolerable than its predecessor, but not an ideal Wolverine movie either. 3/5 is a fair rating.
