Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8

5

Big couple of weeks for the turtles as Michael Bay announced he was producing the film in 2013. Regardless of what you think, remember there's an amazing on-going series by IDW. Old Hob takes Splinter hostage and the turtles face off against mousers.

The Good

Whether you loved the original comic book from the 80s or the cheesy but tons of fun cartoon from the 90s, you're going to love this series. It has familiar characters and tone, and frankly, the book is a lot of fun. This may not be the best jumping on point, but the book does a great job at keeping a newer reader up-to-date with the dialogue.

Dan Duncan's art is great on this issue. He has a great, dynamic style that jumps off the page that is his own. Also, Ronda Pattison's colors have a cool style that mesh so well with Duncan's art. There are two pages, split into four panels that capture this great moment of time of the turtles fighting. These are pages any comic fan would get excited for.

What got me most excited about this issue was seeing elements from the cartoon, which, in turn were from the original comic book. Both are awesome in their own way, but seeing the turtles fight off hordes of Mousers got me all giggly. I'm really digging Old Hob more than any of the other villains in this book. He has a history with Splinter and control of a bunch of Mousers. Pretty cool character.

The Bad

As I mentioned before, this isn't the best jumping-on point, and it's best to read the earlier issues to get the full spectrum of what is going on.

The Verdict

TMNT is what you should be reading if you're outraged by the Michael Bay news. This book is awesome on so many levels. If you read the original book or just watched the cartoon, you'll connect with this book and enjoy the heck out of it.

Dan Duncan's art is awesome and it will really get you excited, especially with Ronda Pattison's colors. Two pages in particular really caught my attention and art like this is what gets comic book fans excited to read comics.

Great characters in this issue, and aside from the characters you know and love, there's also new ones as well. I really loved everything about this book.

Again, if you think Bay is going a bad choice for this film and you claim to be a huge TMNT fan, then why aren't you reading this comic?
