Saga #11 - Chapter Eleven

5

The ship is coming apart and the giant space fetus is trying to swallow it whole. Can Marko, Alana, and company escape?

The Good

The space fetus is trying to suck up The Will's ship and Alana and Marko's ship. Will they be able to escape? We also catch a glimpse at early meetings between Marko and Alana and also a young Marko and his father, Barr.

Writer Brian K Vaughan is brilliant at getting an emotional response from the reader, purely through the development of his characters. While Marko's parents, Barr and Klara haven't been the most supportive of Alana and Marko's marriage, Barr is certainly opening up to it, mainly because of his granddaughter, Hazel. Slowly but surely, we've come to get attached and know these characters a whole lot better, and finally, they feel a part of the team, whether we like it or not. In this issue, Barr truly proves why he's needed in this group, in one emotional scene.

SAGA #11 also gives the reader a bit more back-story on Alana and Marko, in the early years as they talk about having a child and what it is like to be fugitives in love. While it is an argument between these two characters, it's light-hearted, and it's great to see the love between these two characters grow, before they end up on the run. Towards the end of the issue, we get a great scene of Marko, as a child, and his father, Barr, teaching his son how to ride a giant grasshopper. It's another great scene, in this issue, and frankly, a bit heartwarming.

If you don't love The Will by the end of this issue, then you're crazy. In fact, you should have fallen in love with this character a long time ago. He's awesome. He's like Han Solo with a cape, but cooler. There's a fantastic scene (my favorite of the issue) featuring The Will and Lying Cat. It's completely silent, but paced out so well, and it proves that he would do anything for his partner.

Fiona Staples is awesome. I've been saying this since the beginning. The final page of this issue is so awesome. It's a great shot, from behind, of Alana and Marko's spaceship flying through space. It's a simple idea that is executed beautifully. Her art isn't just consistent in each issue. It's consistent over the whole series. You're getting the same high quality art with every issue you buy.

The Bad

I was in for a bit of a surprise, and I opened up this issue, at work, to find the characters having sex. I should know, by now, that, at times, this book is NSFW, and I shouldn't be flaunting it around my coworkers.

I miss Prince Robot IV.

The Verdict

SAGA is fantastic month after month. Brian K Vaughan hits it out of the park with this issue and pulls on the reader's heart strings with a few scenes here. We get a bit more back story of Alana and Marko, and of Marko and Barr, his father. The art is top notch and insanely consistent. This book contains a great ensemble cast you will quickly grow attached to.

Overall, this is one of the best books on the shelf. You should buy it.

Lying Cat!

Also, that one panel, early on, where Marko says something to Alana--y'all know which one I'm talking about--was just hilarious. Too much! :) I never know what to expect, and it's better than I could imagine. All so good.

@DonFelipe: Thanks for the translation.

Saga is consistently one of my favorite books being released. Like many people I am missing the Sulk.

I was so happy that Lying Cat was okay because I don't think The Will could handle another loss.

I sorta wanted to see how he'd deal with it and I'm wondering how he could go out into space with no protection. Same with Lying Cat.

Still, I cheered when he saved her.

The last few pages with Marko speaking in his native tongue was able to be very emotional, even though the reader cant understand the dialogue.

Well, I do believe with a little imagination everyone can get the basics of the dialogue. Just imagine how your father tried to teach you how to ride a bicycle (instead of a giant grasshopper) and you fell off the bike repeatedly.

However, I'm 99% sure the actual language is Esperanto. Its vocabulary derives mostly from Romance languages, with a little bit of German and Greek. I have learned Latin and Spanish among other languages as well. This is how I would translate it:

Marko: "I hate this!" -- (to Barr) "And I hate you, too!"

Barr: "Ouch! I'm gonna pretend you haven't said that, pal!" (That's the toughest one. I'm just guessing "pretend" here.)

Marko: "I cannot do this! I will never be good enough."

Barr: "Listen carefully, Marko. You have to be brave first, before you can be good."

Marko: "Alright, but I only try just one more time."

Barr: "That's my boy!" ("Knabo" from the German word "Knabe" = boy)

Marko: "Go! Faster! Jump!" -- "I did it! Father, I did..."

Don't get me started. Never envied a fictional character so much as Marko in that opening page.

What? Like none of you felt the same. SHUT UP.

I just have a lot of feelings right now. I can't. Oh god.

I...LOVED how embarrassed Alana was regarding her sex talk. So adorable. I've heard complaints regarding, "Everyone knows what ejaculation inside of a woman means. You don't forget that." TRUST me. When you're in an intense enough mood, you say stuff. I hear it, but I disagree.

SO good. This is just...amazing. Shouts to Fiona Staples for drawing the best bodies. Realistically.

Awwwww! Can't wait to see it.

Lol! It's not safe anywhere. It's hard to tell what part of Saga could offend someone or not, there's just too many weird looking characters and things.

I miss Prince Robot IV.

Next issue. #12

Speaking of sex and IV. That particular scene in issue #1 usually is the point where some (selected) friends stop reading or at least start having second thoughts about Saga and probably me, too.

I love Saga - best comic book ever!

I miss The Stalk by the way. Really wish she should come back somehow. Pretty sure The Will would like it, too.

I would buy this book just for the covers. Every one has been gorgeous. It helps that the book is equally amazing.

Cannot wait to pick this up.

EDIT:

This was great as usual. The last few pages with Marko speaking in his native tongue was able to be very emotional, even though the reader cant understand the dialogue.

Fiona Staples art and Alana's dialogue continue to be the stars of this book. 5/5 for me too.

I love this book so much, it's just so perfect. I am scared to read this after the ending to the last issue tho.
