Red Hood and the Outlaws #19 - Communion

4

It's a new adventure for Jason Todd and company as TALON writer James Tynion IV takes over the title.

The Good

It's a new era for Jason Todd and he can certainly use one after suffering an acid attack from the Joker. James Tynion IV is now directing the second Robin's life and he already has a potentially huge change in store for the hero. Before hitting us with a huge cliffhanger, the TALON writer bases his new path for the character on 'The Death of the Family' and all of the new continuity established by former series writer Scott Lobdell. Personally, I was underwhelmed by the big Bat event's conclusion and feared it wouldn't leave a lasting impact, so it's reassuring that it did indeed take a toll on Todd and has lead him to make a massive change. It's a cliffhanger that's certain to divide fans, but we'll have to wait until the next issue to see where Tynion IV will really go with it.

Julius Gopez and Nei Ruffino take over art duties and the end result just feels right. I have a few small gripes here and there with the artwork, but overall it's a style that compliments the tone of the book well. It's a little sketchier and less polished, but that's a great fit for this team's atmosphere, isn't it? The dream sequence was truly a visual treat and the brief moment of Roy taking control was one helluva scene. Truthfully, this scene steals the spotlight and was totally a cheer-worthy moment for me.

The Bad

While I do enjoy the artwork, some facial work feels a little awkward -- almost as if the characters are suffering some kind of uncomfortableness behind the expression. Also, the action sequence in the final moments felt like it lacked any real punch behind it. With Roy, you only see the aftermath of what he does with each attack and Starfire's physical attack (not the projectile) seemed motionless.

I know this is a world of revealing outfits and a strong emphasis on "features," but Starfire's outfit... well, it doesn't leave much to the imagination at all. Someone please get that woman a sweater. Seriously, can we even classify that as a costume or is she just wearing a few accessories? Additionally, having Essence talk to herself when she's alone felt a tad awkward.

The Verdict

I know opinions are going to be extremely divided on the twist here, but I'm holding off on any kind of strong reaction until we get more details in the next issue. For all we know, a reversal option could be revealed in the next chapter and that's what Roy and Starfire will pursue. However, one great thing about this is it gives what could essentially be a fresh start for the character. Considering his rocky history in the New 52, that could absolutely be a good thing if handled well and a solid way for fans to no longer argue over his altered origin. Only time will tell what direction this will go, but for now, you have my curiosity, Tynion IV.

A pet peeve of mine: when people who do not like a series that others are fans of speak highly of "saving" or "turning the book around" as a good thing. I find the notion of "damage control" to correct the entirety of the series thus far outright insulting.

I was disappointed in this issue. If it doesn't get better I might consider dropping this title. I didn't like how Jason's memory was wiped clean. All those events that happened in his life made him who he is today. Now he is just a nobody with no backstory or reasoning for being who he was. The artwork was terrible. When Roy tried to wake up Starfire and got startled his face looked like he just shit his pants! Starfire should have kept her bodysuit from when she rescued her sister and her planet was being invaded. I like full covering bodysuits on female characters instead of the swimsuit or nothing at all costumes. That's what Playboy and Maxim are for.

theres alot that can be done "damage control" wise in this series, in the beginning i was happy with all the new shit. now theres just too many doors open about crap that i dont know should or shouldnt matter. i can't entirely say im happy with this issue but considering a new writer i will give it another 4 issues before i make any judgment. hopefully it can be contained and brought to life why the all caste of all people are mightier to go to after an attack by the joker is a better choice than say ummmm subway. just my thoughts. (also i hope they introduce more background for kori, since they have been lacking on any character developement in my eyes lately)

Actually the damage has been done, thanks to Lobdell. He introduced the all caste s*** out of nowhere in Jason's life.He failed to give a proper direction in Jason's life.He failed to establish a nature of the team as well.As for the time being,Tynion will have to do a lot of things to save this title.

@k4tzm4n: The problem is that Jason defeated the Joker in his head in Lobdell's last issue, actually saying "never again." He reconciled with Bruce. He had resolved not to let his past define him. Which is the exact opposite of what his decision prior to this new issue suggests. A man who has just made peace with his past does not seek to free himself from it immediately thereafter.

It wasn't a bad issue, but while our gripes were the same, they were bigger for me than they seem to have been for you. Starfire's "outfit" is egregious. The art had a lot of off moments for me (and I tend to be pretty generous when appraising that). And the ending sort of completely nullifies the goodwill generated by the previous issue's conclusion. One might go so far as to say it outright ignores/reverses that ending.

The Roy dream sequence was epic, however.

RE: the spoiler -- Unless a specific line is eluding my memory (about his relationship with Wayne), I view his decision as being heavily influenced by the Joker and how he's essentially pulled Todd's strings his entire life, making even the good memories feel tainted to him. With that in mind, I can understand his decision.

I like Roy (majorly because Young Justice cartoon), but it's called "Red Hood and the outlaws", not "The Outlaws and ... oh maybe a bit Red Hood, cause we don't know what to do with him". Seriously, too much Roy, not enough Jason. It's like the writers like Roy more than Jason.

I had the same complaints and thoughts. I'm really going to miss Starfire's space suit attire. It was way better than her, I guess default attire she has now. I'm really looking forward to Tynion on this book, I've really enjoyed the All Caste and Essence stuff. I was hoping that Essence would join the team but I'm glad another female will be joining the cast eventually.

So in issue 18 he forgives Bruce for death of the family

Then batman n redhood something happens but we dont know what it is cause it hasn't came out

Issue 19 hes walking around with his normal face like if issue 17&18 didn't happen. Roy hallucinations just remind us how new 52 is weak when him n Ollie aka green arrow look about the same age...

In my opinion, 4 out of 5 was wayyy to generous for this issue. ..

I think 2 out of 5 is more reasonable

Fixed.

@arnoldoaad: They explained why they couldn't go straight back to where they initially entered the Acres of All. The entrance is constantly moving, and also it opens the door for Roy to have his character develop more. We know a ton about Kori and Jason, but we know very little about Roy's background. I really hope though this mind whip isn't for good. It removes all the emotional impact of the last issue.

@jacobin_wisdom: That is what I felt was their drive. I am assuming whatever happens in the Batman and Redhood Jason kinda disappeared and they were worried. As you stated they are like family and have been through a ton so why let a friend go through something this major alone right?

@k4tzm4n: The group are close friends, and in some ways are family. It's doesn't need to be said, and it's a good enough reason for me.

It seemed like they were improving Starfire's costume awhile back, but now she's pretty much naked. And WHAT is up with those Eyebrows? They just like red check marks on her forehead. I understand there will be folks who like Starfire's look in this comic, but I'm not one of them. Give the lady a robe or something. She a few pasties away from being the female Dr. Manhattan.

yeah that's another problem, there is an scene in the book where i swear if you squint enough you can see her nipples

i fell like half the issue was kind of pointless

I keep wondering why the hell didnt they just take the ship that they have to the place of the all-caste, They already visit this place before, how come it was so difficult to find a second time that it took them almost 2 days?

the ending is like most of the other WTF issues ruin by the stupid cover. and I just dont get it.

Why is this move even necessary? Its like they want to reboot the character but Why?

For some reason, the All Caste and that white haired girl just don't interest me. Just wanted to say that. But anyway, I can't wait until the Red Arrow origin arc that should be coming up soon! Also, now that Jason reconciled with Bruce, I'm hoping we see the Bat family more often--better yet, I'd like to see some more integration with the entire DC universe.

I was getting ready to majorly disagree with your positive review of this issue, but you actually pretty much hit all my big points in the "Bad" section. I guess they just didn't bug you as much. Two things I would add is that almost every panel of the artwork annoyed me, and the entire first half of the issue felt like mostly filler because the nature of the Outlaws urgency to find Jason was never made clear.

On the flip side, I'm interested to see where Tynion takes this. I'm game as long as this is not a permanent change.

The BatWatch Review is up.

Hah, cool to see we're on the same page (for the most part). I, too, was initially questioning why they had such a strong desire to find Todd but it eluded my mind when writing the review.

I honestly didn't even really consider that the cliffhanger would be permanent... if it is in some way that would be a cool way to kick off a new run.

I agree on the art.And i am extremely nervous about the possible new status quo of Jason this can go really bad or really good. Its very risky
