Ant-Man: Last Days #1

5

What happened to Ant-Man before SECRET WARS?

Compared to the other "Last Days" books that Marvel has put out, which have been running numerous issues, LAST DAYS OF ANT-MAN delivers an actual final issue that stands alone as a nice one-shot about the end of the world. There's a lot more to it than that though as writer Nick Spencer, artists Ramon Rosanas, and colorist Jordan Boyd, delve into the idea of where retired super-heroes and villains go when they retire, in a humorous way, nevertheless.

The special continues the humorous tone set-forth in the ANT-MAN on-going series, as the book has Scott running from The Slug on his yacht. The story really revolves around Mary Morgenstern, the owner of a retirement community and investor in Ant-Man Security Solutions. From there, Scott learns that the retirement community is where all the golden age characters live, from there Scott meets a woman at a club during the final days of the 616 and that's about it.

At the surface, this issue seems pointless. However, it's really about Scott's journey before the world ended. Spencer puts a lot of heart into this issue as it's a love letter to this character and it's more a "day in the life of" type of book, which works spectacularly well for this issue. Scott Lang is easily the most relatable and one of the most developed characters at Marvel because of this series. We really get into his head in this issue, almost moreso than any other issue in the series, and it really gives the sense not so much that he's a flawed character but that he's just a regular, average guy, trying to make the best judgement calls he can, like everyone else.

One thing that I've loved on this series is the art from Ramon Rosanas and colors of Jordan Boyd. It really gives the series its own distinctive feel and Boyd's color work just feels very Miami, where needed. The issue is a lot of people having emotional conversations, but Rosanas packs in a lot of emotional expression into each panel, really hitting each scene home.

If you loved ANT-MAN by Spencer, Rosanas, and Boyd, then picking this up is a no-brainer. It's a nice end to the series, before the same creative team takes on ASTONISHING ANT-MAN in October. It has a ton of heart and it's nice to see a Last Days issue just be a one-shot.
