Justice League United #0 - Justice League Canada, Part 1 of 5

4

There’s a new Justice League in town. Actually, it’s out of town. Up in Canada.

The Good

This definitely looks like it’s going to be a different sort of Justice League comic. This is a good thing. Just as the previous JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA had a different vibe and reason for existence compared to the team in JUSTICE LEAGUE, this looks like a different take on the idea of the team as well as a different tone for the New 52.

This is one of those stories where we’re completely thrown right into the middle of the action. A team is formed and we have absolutely no idea how and why these here’s have gathered and where they’re fighting. It’s a strange mix of characters and not knowing why they’re together adds some fun and mystery to the book. The action does jump back three days prior and we see Animal Man and Stargirl at a celebrity convention up in Toronto. Again, this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but it sets the stage for these two heroes to meet Adam Strange.

Soon they find themselves in the middle of a strange fight with some other heroes joining in on the fun. Throughout the comic, we get moments of humor that lightens up the tone. This is welcomed, especially after how dreary things got for everyone during Forever Evil. We even seen that part of the team dynamic will include certain characters bickering a bit with each other. That’s always a nice touch as it’s hard to believe that every member of a team can immediately get along with everyone else. We also meet a new character that has been described as being highly important.

Mike McKone’s art really shines here. It’s great to see him in this book as I’ve been admiring the art and sketches he’s been posting on his Twitter page. He does the characters justice and helps add to the change in tone during the fighting and afterwards.

The Bad

There’s quite a bit of confusion here. Part of it is we have no idea how FOREVER EVIL ends and why Animal Man and Stargirl are in Canada. We get a glimpse of a non-Red Lantern Supergirl (am I behind on RED LANTERNS?) and another former JLA member. Both of their appearances are not explained just yet. We also see a couple other characters seemingly randomly thrown in towards the end. Long time fans of Alan and Alana might have concern over the changes made to them as they are introduced in the New 52. It’s possible we haven’t seen all there is to them just yet.

We’ll have to wait. Some of the confusion can’t be helped with FOREVER EVIL pushed back. The rest is just part of the storytelling. The action and humor will set your mind at ease if you must have answers right away.

I wasn't quite sure why this was a zero issue instead of #1. Obviously, not a big deal.

The Verdict

Jeff Lemire has delivered a new Justice League team. Having a Justice League team in Canada does help to give this title a different feel from the regular JUSTICE LEAGUE team. There are some nice little references Canadians or friends of Canadians will appreciate. Mike McKone’s art also plays a part in making this a great looking comic that is sure to be fun to read. We may not have all the answers as to why and how all these heroes have come together but it’s going to be a blast to find out. You should definitely check this out.

There was Booster? I missed that. But great start an extremely interesting team that I want to see more of.

It's kind of infuriating the delays have for Forever Evil have screwed up a lot of my books DC you need to hire artists can stick to a monthly schedule.

Cool issue, this was definitely on my most anticipated comics.

The new Cree superhero Equinox also seems really interesting

Trying to decide whether to read this. I like Lemire and Martian Manhunter is one of my favorites. I'll probably pick this one up and take it on an issue by issue basis.

My favorite part of this book was the dialogue between Green Arrow and Animal Man. In an interview Jeff Lemire stated he wanted to give them a relationship similar to Blue Beetle and Booster Gold in JLI. The art didn't do much for me. I loved McKone on Avengers Academy but his art looked pretty stiff here. Stargirl's staff got a little wonky in a lot of panels too. Still I love the cast and the writer. Excited to see what next month brings.

I was not a big fan of the art. I really liked the dialogue and character interaction in this book, it makes me look forward to seeing these guys work as a team. Plus the fact that we will see Lobo and Hawkman, the two biggest bad @$$es in DC fight, is going to be very sweet to read :)

Also, if your curious about that new girl, then check out this video:

Loading Video...

Also Tony, I think it makes perfect sense that Stargirl and Animal Man are signing autographs, because they are both celebrity heroes. Animal Man is a movie star, and Courtney has been shown to be a very popular poster girl type character in the New 52. So I think them being at a convention makes sense.

Only if every artist was Andrea Sorrentino, Mikel Janin and Aaron Kuder (Kuder is quick enough that he is doing part of the Action Comics Annual #3 in July)

I enjoyed this issue.

I'm generally not a big fan of team books, but I added this one to my pull after Animal Man ended because it was the only way to get my Lemire penned Buddy Baker fix. I was kind of disappointed with this issue. The scene with Equinox was super confusing, it didn't seem like there was all that much in the way of setup, things just kind of happen. I'm sure we'll get more explanation later, but it was still frustrating. I also thought the art was super rough in places. I'll keep the book around for the first arc, but this issue left me pretty unimpressed.

Also, if your wondering "What possible threat could be in Canada" well this video shows the horrible crime wave spreading through Canada that the JLU need to stop

Yeah I know I just posted a video a few panels up, but I figured I may as well stick this in, because I know people are going to start making lots of Canada puns. Rightly so too, any country that puts a leaf on their flag already knows they will be made fun of :) (kidding of course)

@g_man: Uh, we saw Supergirl in this issue? Where was that?

Anyway, I loved this issue. The dialogue and character interaction were great and the set up for the story arc is really cool. I also disagree with some of the people here. I, for the most part, really liked the art. There were some places where the characters looked a little stiff or awkward, but it was easily overshadowed by McKone's sharp, well-defined lines and the bright colors.

This actually makes me want to go back and read Forever Evil, or at least the last few issues of Justice League of America to understand what happened to the team.

The only thing I kind of disliked was that they retconned Alanna to be from Earth. But, I can overlook that.

I didn't think there was anything confusing about this issue, it makes sense that Animal Man and Star Girl would be at a con since they are both celebrities also I'm just presuming this takes place after Supergirl gets rid of the ring.

Did anybody see the Judge Dredd cameo?

I am glad I picked this title up. The roster is awesome, the creative team great and the first issue shows so much promise.

I agree this issue was confusing at times, probably because of all the flashbacks and future glimpses and the fact that three stories (atm) are told together make it jump all over the place. Also the scene with Equinox was very confusing, but I am pretty sure we will get an explanation.

Canadian Justice League. That's a new one.

And I see Kara finally got the damn ring off. Why writers are so obsessed with angst, I'll never know. (Seriously, the poor girl's had enough) But that doesn't justify ripping off Superboy-Prime.

Does every review give positive points for humor? If JL became a book of one liners would it get consistent 5 stars? Stand up comics could have a bright future in the comics industry.

Depends on the humor, depends on the title, depends on the atmosphere and depends on the company.
I mean it is good humor and it was humor the writer wanted to incorporate into the story and it fit the story and characters. I don't see how is that a problem.Ex. Captain america 2 gets bonus for its good humor while Thor 2 or Iron Man 3 loses points because of bad humor...see the difference.

@squalleon: Yes and no. Good humor vs bad humor is subjective, but overall I understand the point you are making. My point is, if a book is going for a serious tone and delivers on that serious tone if it has no humor that has become a problem nowadays. Reading Forever Evil to readers has become a chore it seems like because they don't give you a joke every 5 pages. Should Deadpool become a serious book? Certainly not. Should books feel the need to give you cheesy humor in order for the reader to have a smile on their face? Not in my opinion. If the tone is supposed to be serious why are you expecting comedy. Don't mind me though this is a peeve of mine, really tired of seeing every review cry for jokes.

You look at this from a wrong perspecive. Most readers complain about the lack of lighter titles of DC. Everything seems too bleak, DC finally seems to make their repertoire more diverse by adding some lighter titles, thats why it is a pro for a DC title to contain some humor. People don't complain about bleak titles in Marvel because Marvel is full of light-hearted titles, the opposite happens, people complain about the lack of bleak titles in MARVEL, just go to the daredevil forums and you will see what I mean. Thing is there must be some balance and DC didn't have that balance nor does Marvel.

Maybe they wanted to escape the stereotypical hot damsel in distress/romantic interest. To be honest I find Alanna's new design too be too generic(T-shirt and pants really?).
Or do you mean her origin because I am sure we haven't seen everything yet.

@squalleon: The original had been around for almost sixty years and had a very basic colouring, like most characters in those days (it was easier to colour in two tones.) The skin colour swap is a little different as well, mostly because every Rannian that I have ever seen looks to be white, though I guess that she is human now.

@razzatazz: Well, It seems Rannians come in black too :-P I mean if Krypton has black kryptonians I don't see why Rann wouldn't. I hope she is not human, it takes away much from the character.
I hope we will see her in her unique get up soon enough because I really hate the shirt and pants she looks like a background filler.

@squalleon: Fair points. My mentality is if u want to read light books go read light books. Go read Marvel in other words. Why bother demanding DC for light books and the inverse for Marvel? Just read what u want. It's kind of how I am with artists. I can't stand crappy art. I don't go crying for a different artist, I just go read a book where the art is more my speed. Get what I mean? Overall I understand your reasoning and you make sense.

Because there are some heroes in DC you like? Because some heroes aren't meant to be bleak (or at least not all the time), like some others aren't meant to be fun.

Well, everything from the "Edge" or "Dark" or "Batman" families(that is way more than dc's half titles), Supergirl is all about angst, same with Superboy, Earth 2 is an ongoing tragedy, nothing fun about it,I can name more but that should be enough. In movie form, MoS is a perfect example about why "dark" doesn't fit everything.
Of course, that doesn't mean these titles are bad, it's just that a company should have some variety on their books.

@g_man: Oh, yeah, well. That's supposedly set in the future and the issue itself won't drop for a number of months. Its to be presumed that Supergirl may be free of the red ring by then, especially since the Supergirl solicits indicate an "ending" to the Red Daughter of Krypton arc.

@squalleon: Our opinions really differ here. NW I have rly liked. Batgirl I have LOVED. Earth 2 I read 2 trades and rly enjoyed it. Supergirl and Superboy we agree on.

I know I am in a major minority here, but I personally think MOS was one of the best comic movies I have ever seen. Right up there with the Avengers, Winter Soldier and TDK.

While I love NW, the new 52 title wasn't really of my liking due to lack of direction and because of event fatigue.I only liked the first arc from Earth 2, it lacked focus and the dialogue was almost unbearable at times, of course it became a sh!tty mess when Taylor took over, it feels like Injustice 2.0. full of shock value.

It had many flaws both in it's direction but mostly in its script, but it was a nice movie. But I believe Winter Soldier, TDK and Iron Man are leagues ahead of it.

@squalleon: ye NW is up and down but overall I liked it. I have only read James Robinson earth 2 run so maybe I haven't experienced the part u dislike. You are the second person to tell me they dislike the dialogue though maybe I am in a minority there as well.

MOS was soooooooo good to me. Only problem with it was the excessive destruction, but I look past it because this is his first ever encounter. Hopefully he will be more conscious and closer to the comic supes in the next movie in that degree.

@g_man: I just read the issue. I agree it does get confusing, but it's still good. I think this takes place after Supergirl gives up the Red Lantern ring and after Forever Evil. But apparently Supergirl is still a Red Lantern in the Supergirl and Red Lantern books and she doesn't give it up until the July issues comes out. So, this series is WAY ahead of itself. I found out about the July issues from the recent DC solicits that came out just this past week. I honestly don't like these issue schedules and delays coming up because all these stories get distorted on where they take place.

I too disagree with G-Man's opinion that this issue was too confusing. Like others have said, it makes sense that two celebrity superheroes would take a trip to Comic-Con to sign autographs and that this probably takes place after Kara apparently is cured of the red ring in July's issue of Supergirl. Hawkman was probably just abducted like the rest of the prisoners. Equinox's scenes were a bit confusing, I suppose, but that's just because it's setting up the mystery of that character's story for future issues.

What I really do agree on, and wanted to comment on myself is that this really wasn't a regular issue zero, in that instead of standing alone from the story, it jumps right into it, and therefore might as well have been issue one. I guess the idea of issue zeroes were introduced during Zero Hour as tie-ins, then were brought back for the New 52's Zero Month. But even other issue zeroes, such as the one for the 2006-2011 Justice League of America series really had nothing to do with the first arc.

I too had forgotten that Supergirl was in the issue at all because most of the issue took place before the first scene, but those jumps back to explain how we got where we are are not uncommon in any form of storytelling. And no, Booster Gold was not in this issue. Also, because I'm more into the writing, I really never pay attention to or have opinions on the are unless it's a completely different style I don't like, such as too cartoony, or too realistic like that ugly Alex Ross-y stuff.

I remember poutine. It really is delicious. I remember it's french fries covered with cheese and gravy, but always feel like I'm forgetting a fourth ingredient. Does anyone remember poutine containing anything else?

@newcomicguy J'onn is one of my favorites too. I really hope that the solicits for Futures end that say he's been on Earth all along to prepare for a Martian invasion get explained some other way.

@zeeguy91 I think all you have to read is the final issue of JLA which comes out in May. The previous few issues are all ready out and just tie in to Forever Evil. In order to find out what happened to the JLA, I'd say they're unnecessary.

@ultron345 I too really liked Man of Steel. I also really liked Iron Man 3, which I know a lot of other users strongly dislike. But I think that's primarily because of "What they did to the Mandarin!"

@kilowog52: traditional poutine is indeed cheese curds on fries with gravy poured over. You can add all kinds of variation to that like bacon/pulled pork/sausage etc. Pretty much anything good can be tossed in there and called a "bacon/sausage etc.." poutine...

@ultron345: I personally think Snyder has no grasp of the character that Superman is & really doesn't give two craps about it. Cause just like with Nolan it is his take on the character (don't get me started with the DKR). It is all about Snyder's vision. The movie was absolutely no fun & never once did I really care about Superman. So if I can get pass all that then you still have the Pa Kent death which was pretty terrible writing in my opinion & a pretty cringe worthy scene. Then him killing Zod. Completely saw it coming & realized what I noticed from the begging that this movie is just plan bad. The very end of the movie felt like the begging of the next reboot of Superman to me. Glaring mistakes in my humble opinion.
