Epic Kill #1

2

Song doesn't know who she is, but she knows how to take a man down for good... or a whole group of them.

The Good

There's some really cool action sequences, as we learn more about the character and how she can seemingly see things a lot slower than normal people. She doesn't seem to have any super-powers, but she's had an immense amount of training.

The idea of Song having hallucinations and needing to take a moment to come back to the real world was an interesting element. I'm wondering if that's going to continue playing out throughout the mini-series and how it will overall affect her.

The Bad

I played a lot of RPG video games growing up, and one cliche intro I'm tired of seeing is a character who starts their journey with amnesia, doesn't know who they are, but finds they have fantastic powers or abilities. That's exactly the story we have here. It's been over-done.

I've never seen onomatopoeias that were so distracting. Most of them look like someone went into Microsoft Word's 3D Word Art and pasted in the comic.

The Verdict

Here's the thing with Epic Kill. I wasn't a fan of this book, but that doesn't mean it's bad. There's so many elements of this issue that are right down the middle that it doesn't fit into a "good" or "bad" category. With Image Comics putting out so many great new series, I had high hopes for this issue, but I ended up being extremely disappointed.

The art and the dialogue are ok. They're nothing to get extremely excited about. The story, minus the amnesia bit is also ok. Sadly, nothing truly stands out in this book.

On the good side of things, I thought the action sequences were pretty cool, and I enjoyed the whole aspect of Song having hallucinations was cool.

On the bad side of things, I feel like amnesia is a very over-used story element, and you can use it as long as you add something new and exciting to it, which this book really doesn't do. The giant onomatopoeia word art was also very distracting. It would have been better if it were hand drawn.

Overall, I do not recommend this issue. It was a bit of a let down for me.
