Detective Comics #934 - Rise of the Batmen Part 1: The Young and the Brave

5

There's a new threat in Gotham, and Batman has to change his tactics to protect the future.

Batman is often seen as a lone crime fighter despite being known as part of the Dynamic Duo. Batman has been a member of the Justice League and Outsiders, but still spends a lot of time fighting on his own. All that is about to change in a big way. A new threat arrives in Gotham, and it just might be too much for Batman to handle alone. With several allies in the Bat-Family running around Gotham, it's time to make sure they're ready for the danger that is targeting them all.

James Tynion IV dives right into this new direction. The dangers in Gotham are usually pretty serious, but you know it's a big deal when Batman decides to get some help. Seeking out Batwoman and confiding in her is a big step for Bruce. It shows readers how hazardous things could become, and it also shows some growth for Batman. He's been through a lot lately and has managed to come out on top. That still doesn't mean he can do it all on his own. He has a lot of faith in the young heroes in Gotham but realizes they're not quite ready for what's headed their way. We've seen so many Batman stories over the years, and this is a fantastic change of pace.

Eddy Barrows' pencils, Eber Ferreira's inks, and Adriano Lucas' colors are gorgeous. If you're going to have a huge Batman story with so many fan-favorite characters, you have to have amazing visuals. All the characters gathered and appearing here look so dang good. After reading the issue, I found myself flipping back through it to just take everything in once again.

Detective Comics is off to am extraordinary start. James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, and Adriano Lucas are spoiling us from the beginning. I am so excited to see where things go from here. Because we've read countless Batman stories over the years, it's refreshing to see a major title take a new approach and deliver a new vibe. This is a comic I can't put down. It should be made clear, this isn't just a Batman book. There are so may great characters here I would be surprised if there wasn't something for everyone. This book is definitely going to be a blast.
