Batman, Incorporated #7 - Belly of the Whale

4

It's not looking too good for Batman or Batman Incorporated as Talia's plans continue to unravel.

The Good

We're seeing some dark times in the Batman comics. Even though Death of the Family isn't affecting this title, Batman has his hands full with Talia and Leviathan. Last issue we saw Batman Inc suffer a big loss and Batman was at the mercy of the Heretic.

Normally we always see Batman on top. This is definitely an issue where we get to see the aftermath of the destruction. While Talia's plan is far from over, taking Batman out of the spotlight allows us to see more of the other characters involved, as this title should. This book isn't just about Batman. Whether it's seeing the repercussion of the loss of a character or Commissioner Gordon questioning what they're doing (when Batman isn't around), we get to see the story from a different angle. That's not something we typically see in Batman stories.

Let's not forget about Damian. Seeing him in the Batcave with his new animal companions or Dick, Tim and Jason working with Batman makes the excitement increase. This is why I'd love to see a BATMAN FAMILY title focusing on these characters working together.

As for Leviathan's plans, seeing it unfold is a little unsettling. The idea of the people that have become part of Leviathan is a scary one. We see some imagery that shows how 'real' it is in this situation and reminds us that Grant Morrison isn't taking things lightly. Chris Burnham contributes this with the way he draws the scenes.

The Bad

As much as I enjoy seeing this part of the story, it was a little odd having Batman so silent. He may be unconscious for part of the comic but it's a little weird not having him utter a single line.

I'm a big fan of Burnham's art but there were some moments when the art felt off a tiny bit. Despite this, it's still a great fit for the story. There were three pages drawn by Jason Masters. The slight difference also threw me off a bit.

The Verdict

Talia al Ghul and Leviathan are not playing around with Batman. This issue shows us a slightly different side as the repercussions from last issue are shown and Batman struggles to deal with his defeat. There is a big sense of the unknown when it comes to Grant Morrison's storytelling. You feel like there's the possibility that 'anything goes.' Burnham's art captures the grittiness of the events as they unfold. There were a couple moments it felt off but the visuals and colors by Nathan Fairbairn made for some cool moments. I'm almost scared to read the next issue but there's no way I won't read it as soon as it's out. Batman may have misjudged what Talia is capable of.

It's sad to think we only have 5 more issues left of Grant Morrison's wackiness. Despite the dark times depicted in the last few issues, Morrison's Batman story has been, at it's core, fun - maybe not for the characters, but for the readers.

Its not looking good for Batman nd Batman Inc as long as Morronison keeps writing it. Hope they can bring in a writer who at least tries to write a good story after he leaves. Only five more issues? Cant wait.

I'm totally with you on this review. It was nice to see the Bat Family go to work, and I would love to see a title focusing on the Bat Family. Perhaps it could be like a team up book mixing up members of the Bat Clan?

I also didn't much care for the art in this issue. It was really weird at moments. For instance, Red Robin lands on his head and shoulder at one point which would almost certainly cripple him. Also, I don't much care for The Heretic's origin...if it is to be believed.

The BatWatch Review is up.

Asked and it shall be answered. It was the first one I did today, and I agree with you, it was really great. Honestly, today was a good day for Batman comics in general.

How can you enjoy the concept of Batman Incorporated yet not enjoy Morrison's since Batman Incorporated was all Morrison's work?

I've never checked this out, since I thought the whole Batman Inc deal was ridiculous, with Bruce announcing he funds Batman....gah.

Perhaps, however the story itself is the(in my opinion of course) the best Bat-Book right now and one of the best comic books in general currently being released.

Burham's art is like a poor man's Quitely. Unfortunately Daniels is pre-occupied with his title.

How can you not like the possibility that the Heretic is who Damian thinks he is? Oh and birthed in the belly of a whale! Great stuff!

Between this and the B&R; annual it's a good week to be a Damian fan. I liked seeing more Tim in this issue too. I hate how disconnected he's become from the Bat family.

Well, to each their own, but it still seems odd to love a concept that has been executed by a guy whose work you hate. @weenman1 said:

I didn't like it too much because I thought The Heretic was going to be Damian from the future therefore justifying issue 5's flash forward. Without that future Damian appearing in the present, I don't understand the importance of it.

Apparently Heretic is the Damian who's gonna fail Gotham ,or atleast that's what Damian thinks.

That crossed my mind, but yet, we see that the Batman of the future has great respect for the legacies of previous Batmen, and we see a flashback of a young Damian kneeling over the body of a dead Batman. I guess you could say that Clone Damian just saw this scene, but that certainly was not the implication. Thus, I am confuzzled.

Yeah this has been bothering me too since INC #5,I just cant see the connection between Hurt,Talia,Damian,Heretic and 666 Gotham.

@entropy_aegis: Well at the end of 5's future part of the story, future Damian looks at somebody and says, "You, you are responsible for this." or something like that. My theory was that Talia went to the future to reap real future Damian and then took him to the past and convinced him the only way to keep the bad future from happening was to change his past actions and turn on Batman. Thus, future real Damian became The Heretic, but if that is the case, this whole last issue was a major red herring.

the only thing that would make me cry is finding out that Damian Wayne isn't even Batman's son.
