Batman, Incorporated #10 - Gotham's Most Wanted

4

The deadly battle between Batman and Leviathan continues. Find out how far each will go to in order to win.

The Good

The fight between Batman and Talia is continuing to escalate. We've seen Batman suffer a huge loss and seeing him trying to continue with the odds against him increasing is great. What we are seeing is the end of Batman Incorporated. This is something Grant Morrison has mentioned and it is fitting with his run quickly coming to a close.

We are now seeing in the midst of this battle, Batman also has to deal with Gotham City being against him. This isn't in the Scott Snyder/Gotham-is-an-entity approach. This is the people of the city. While it might be a bit extreme, I have to say I am completely on board with Batman not being welcomed in the city. I totally miss the days when Batman operated in the shadows and outside of the media's eye. Batman Incorporated was an odd direction but it did provide a new direction and many stories since Morrison introduced it.

The battle has escalated. You can feel the explosive finale is fast approaching and there's no telling what will happen next.

With each issue, I enjoy seeing Chris Burnham's art. His depiction of the city in chaos is fantastic. It's great seeing Bruce Wayne still showing bruises on his face, something that usually magically disappears in the next issues of other titles. There is a lot to see in this issue. Grant is having the art team throw in lots of details and locations.

You should also be happy at the appearance of a couple characters we haven't seen much of in the New 52.

The Bad

There is a slight odd feeling in terms of the timing of events. Bruce is still bruised from his fight but it almost feels like a lot has happened since issue 8.

We know by now not to worry about continuity with other titles. It is a little difficult to overlook the fact that the events dealing with Damian are heavily felt in the other titles yet the repercussions of city's turn on Batman and Batman Inc. are not being seen.

I enjoy Burnham's art but as when there are multiple artists on a single issue, you can feel a slight jarring distraction when the art shifts to Jason Masters.' It's just enough for you to get momentarily pulled out of the story.

Many have been having problems over the gatefold covers all month in the DC Comics. The cover was pretty cool but, for obvious reasons, it would have been better if that image wasn't used to take away from the actual events in the issue.

The Verdict

The end is near. Batman is trying to end the battle against Talia and Leviathan. Things are not going according to plan for either side and you can feel the tension rising as the story approaches the conclusion. With some welcomed appearances by a couple characters, the story continues with a big feeling of everything being unpredictable. With Morrison ready to end his run, you can't tell what might happen next. It's almost enough to make you scared to see the next couple issues. Of course there's no way you'll want to miss them.

This was probably the only WTF reveal that turned out to be something that actually happened in the story, actually had a real impact on the story, and was just plain cool as well.

@g_man: Probably meant "shifts."

I have no clue what you mean. He totally wrote shifts.

Its a real shame that Chris Burnham seemingly cant keep up with a monthly series. At least Jason Masters is pretty good and matches Burnhams style well but those two pages by Andrei Bressan were just terrible and REALLY took me out of the story. Other than that the last two pages were amazing and the callback to Year One was perfect.

Batman, Incorporated has kind of broken my heart. I thought it was going to be going new places, but in recent interviews, I've seen the Morrison's real plan is to use this series to restore the Batman universe to it's original default setting, and that's kind of annoying.

There was a lot of cool stuff happening in the issue. My only real complaint was that it feels like there is too much going on. All the little subplots are bogging down the central narrative. It feels like each issue could easily be twice as long.

Anybody have guesses as to the identity of the group holding Jason?

This issue kicked major bat butt! I love the incorporation (ha get it incorporation) of elements from morrison's past stories in his excellent bat run. @batwatch Isn't Batman being returned to the "default" setting exactly what happened after death of the family, the story arc that was supposedly going to change the bat family forever? Nothing changed, and at least morrison has been willing to make some big moves in his time in the bat universe.

Leviathan seems like an odd name for a bad guy, unless he was an Aquaman villain first.

@thejman251: I hope he does kill Talia off plus if she dies not like she will be gone for long. I think that might be cool kill her off with Damian dead then wait a year have a huge Batman event with league of shadows and who shows up Talia and Damian.

I hated the end where he enjected himself with the Man-bat serum, just put on the Suit of Sorrows Bats.

- Well, i'm personally not particularly keen to that idea but it does sound somewhat interesting.

I always enjoy the balls out craziness of this series. The ending was ridiculous in the best way.

Actually, no. What was the default setting established with DotF? The Family was strained at the end of the last arc.

I agree that Morrison has made big moves in his Batman stories, but now he is resetting everything by his own admission. Personally, I like changes that last a little longer.

Did he? I missed that. I agree though with Ultra that the man-bat element doesn't make any sense.

@the_tree: What was Michael's role in this

He agreed to help, and according to comments above, he also let Bruce borrow some equipment.

I wanted to punch whoever drew the Nightwing and Red Robin pages through my comic. They were bad. This story is getting a little crazy, and I might be alone here, but I did think it was kinda cool how Batman used a combination of the suit of sorrows, the exo-skeleton, and the man-bat serum. Hopefully in the next issue, we Bruce chose to take the serum. It's all kinda weird, but I expect nothing less from Grant Morrison. I've loved all his Batman work so far, so I trust in him to finish this story off strong. Pretty good issue overall.

One question though, does the world know that Bruce has a biological son? I know Bruce makes sure to erase all records of the Batman family throughout the world, but will just saying Damian is in Europe from now on really work?

@batwatch: Yeah, it's on the page where he injects himself. You can tell by the arms; he's wearing the chainmail and wrist brace/blade things from the Suit of Sorrows. I think he's going all out, and he sees the best option being a combination of the Suit of Sorrows, the Man-Bat serum, and the prototype exoskeleton. It's pretty f###ing crazy, but I find it incredibly kick ass.

We don't really know. Bruce asked Michael about the suit, and Michael talked to him about it. Then, Michael agreed to aid Batman. At the end, Bruce, according to some, was wearing it at the end of the issue. I actually missed it because I was distracted by some other big things in the panel. It was kind of busy.

The art didn't bug me.

Totally missed it. Obviously, I caught the other two, but somehow, I overlooked the suit. Weird. It is pretty awesome though. However, why not go in with the team?

I love that Gotham PD sends in three pigs with baseball bats to smash the bat-signal instead of a couple maintenance guys with tools to deconstruct it. The metaphor is uncanny.
