Batman Eternal #1

4

It all begins here. Because you can never have too much Batman (NEVER), the new weekly series is here and starts off with a bang.

The Good

There's some big and bad things headed to Gotham City. Batman can never be happy and Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV are setting things up to make sure that status quo sticks. The idea of a weekly Batman series seems daunting. We saw a glimpse in the recent BATMAN #28 and the first page guarantees a bad time for Bruce and Gotham.

One of the immediate nice things you'll notice is this series isn't going to be just about Batman. Sure, we all love the Dark Knight but he does have a few other books on the shelves. Seeing the Gotham City Police Department play a bigger role is a nice way to start out. You could even say the main character of this issue isn't Batman. It's no joke, things are getting shaken up. BATMAN: ETERNAL isn't going to be a throw away series. This is shaking up the Bat-Universe and it's going to be an exciting time.

Jason Fabok gives us a powerful intro to the series. There's a lot of big action and the characters look majestic. You'll find yourself pausing and hovering over each panel, taking in all the detail.

The Bad

Obviously with a weekly series, pacing will be a factor in the series. We can't get everything at once and this is setting up the series.

Part of the excitement in the developments in this issue were given away. We saw the "Thanksgiving" issue with a pretty big hint for what's in store for Jim Gordon. Also, seeing the Channel 52 spoiler in the back of all DC titles last week (and this week) takes away the intensity of the moment.

The Verdict

There have been some debating whether or not to get into the new weekly Batman title. If you're reading the Batman titles, you won't want to miss what is starting out here. Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and the others are ready to shake Gotham City to its core. This won't be a series you'll want to miss. The nice thing is it appears it won't simply focus on Batman. There are so many other great characters in the Bat-Universe as well and this could be a great way to give them the focus they deserve. This issue shows promise that the series will deliver deep stories and doesn't just try to entice you with gimmicks or insane explosions, although there are some really pretty ones here. Jason Fabok's art is killer here. It's a great time to be a Batman fan.

I am so torn on this. I buy exclusively trades but I want to be able to experience this on a weekly basis. Batman is my favorite character and I love the Bat-family so this title has me all kinds of intrigued.

as a trades guy this series is perfect because I don't have to wait long to see what happens next (only a week)

@fil123: Glad to hear you enjoyed the first issue. I'll be reading it later today. I am a trades guy only because of storage purposes. I don't have much room and it is so much easier and aesthetically pleasing to put trades on a shelf than to have boxes of issues sitting around.

Enjoyed this. Personally, I'm not a huge huge fan of Fabok's art. It's pleasing to the eye, but everyone always looks so damn buff. Apart from that, I really enjoyed this and it felt like a great intro. So glad Bats' has a weekly, gonna be great!

I seriously hope this doesn't become a necessary read to enjoy the main Batman series following Zero Year. I would love to pick this series up, but with it being both a weekly title and $2.99 per week...I just can't afford to keep up with that for 60 issues. v__v

I really liked this issue, and the direction the series seems to be going in. This was a better debut than last weeks Detective Comics IMO.

If I get this, I'll get it two months from now on Comixology when it goes down in price. I wonder how sales will go, a couple of months from now. Also if this is mandatory to catch everything up in the Bat Universe, why waste our time with Zero Year?

I feel like it probably will. Snyder just mentioned that when he's done with Zero Year, this is the continuity he'll be coming back to.

Yeah I've heard him mention that, but Snyder also said that after Zero Year the next storyline he'll be doing is a short detective-style one before things start tying into Eternal. I just hope you can still enjoy Batman without having to read Eternal to understand everything that's doing on.

I thought this issue was great. It didn't answer many questions that the Batgivings teaser left us with, but the action was awesome and I'm very intrigued by the story so far.

I think that the villain talking to Bruce in "The End" is either Hush or Lincoln March/Thomas Wayne Jr. I would be very surprised if it's the Joker. It didn't seem like the Joker's personality at all.

I'm excited about this. Was taking to a friend about the Spider-verse Sony is making and it dawned on us that more than any other character, Batman and his supporting cast could be a universe of their own, so I'm looking forward to all of that being explored.

I would replace the word never, with always. Still it is his 75th year, so hpfully after this DC and WB will start to cut down on Batman.

I was heavily debating whether to wait for the trades for this series or not because of it being weekly, this is one of the cases I'm glad I didn't. I cant recall a more attention grabbing first page in recent memory.

Just read the issue and I agree with the review. The art is excellent and the story has me intrigued for the future but it was definitely a set-up for what's to come. If the GCPD get a good portion of the spotlight like they did in this issue then I'll be very happy. Can't wait for all the Bat-craziness coming in this series.

To be honest, I had assumed it was Catwoman since she was revealed to be the King Pin in issue 38.5

I'd love to read this. If DC had gone bi-monthly with it, I'd have found a way to make it work. Weekly though, no way I'm dropping four other books just to read this one. Props to DC for going with a $3 price though, that kinda surprises me.

@arturocalakayvee:

It could be Catwoman, but she doesn't know Bruce's identity yet (maybe she will though) and I don't think that she's evil/crazy enough to burn down part of Gotham.

I looked at the first page and said: "Wow, I so know that this won't have any lasting ripercussion!"

Seriously, I was so passionate about superheroes like a couple of years ago, and then I noticed that they just do the same thing over and over and over... I can't get excited anymore.

Still, I am so happy, it opened so many more horizons for me, comic book wise. There are so many great original stories out there...

I hadn't thought of that. I hope not though because that would ruin Dick as a character, but it would make for an insane story.

It's 52 issues, unless it is going on for more than a year now, which would be odd.

ok, so I didn't read all of zero year(it was way too long and money consuming. I had that, my other DC titles, marvel titles, and forever evil+tie ins to buy) so can someone briefly explain what happened with Zero year and where Detective, Batman, and Eternal is taking off continuity wise? Thanks

All I'm saying is that Bruce's eyes in the first page looked yellow, which made me think of Scarecrow's fear toxin, but the flames might just be giving him that color. But considering Snyder and everyone else, it'll be someone new I'm sure.

Agreed on Lincoln March. He was on the Chris Burnham variant to Detective Comics #27 for no apparent reason, but maybe it's actually to tie into what's going on here.
