Arrow #213 - Heir to the Demon

4

The League of Assassins returns to Starling City and Moira announces she's running for mayor.

Tonight's episode of Arrow, "Heir to the Demon," balances Sara's dilemma with the League of Assassins and the issues behind Moira becoming a mayoral candidate. While one sounds like it's full of action and the other sounds... well, somewhat bland, they're thankfully both full of pretty engaging drama.

First and foremost, the political push Moira is making has brought about some legitimately compelling material. Without spoiling anything, let's just say this episode was able to completely change Oliver and Moira's relationship while also further establishing the potential mayor as a much bolder and stronger character. Overall, the scenes surrounding her are somewhat brief, but they're my personal highlights of the episode due to some commendable performances and tension (e.g. scenes with Felicity, Brother Blood and how it all concludes). They've been teasing us with Slade, but now it looks like this plot will finally make him step into the light.

On the League of Assassins side of things, Caity Lotz sold the trauma she was experiencing and turned much of her situation into an honestly enjoyable dose of drama. There was a completely unexpected twist thrown in there with Nyssa al Ghul and it made the situation much more interesting than expected. It didn't boil down to just a series of action sequences as Sara tries to elude them -- there was an appreciated dose of solid emotion in there, especially with her father.

The stunt work remains strong as usual, but some very awkward editing in a few moments took away from the experience and, at one point, an assassin and Oliver make a debut as if they're teammates. Yes, it's clear Ollie was chasing him, but their entrance felt awkward. There's one moment which takes away from the effectiveness of the final fight (which has a neat round of bow and arrow fighting) and came off as somewhat silly and forced. Also, as cool as Nyssa's entrance may be, does anyone else find it odd she can just casually walk away after taking out a handful of security guards in a major city's airport?

Laurel has a right to be upset with the developments here -- especially after all she's been through -- but damn, they're really going to make us wait awhile before she gets some redemption and we can legitimately root for her, aren't they? She continues to lash out in a manner that makes her unlikable instead of wanting to see things get better for her.The flashback scenes cut to her family life with Sara to help sell the character's return in the episode, but truthfully, it didn't expand my emotional connection to the two. Continuing with the islands plot would have been more effective, but maybe that's just me.

Minor gripes: the music in Oliver's final scene makes it beyond obvious what's going to happen and felt a bit too "teen drama" for me. I'm glad this relationship is happening, but the execution took away from it a bit. Oh, and where's Roy? It seems odd to leave us on such a promising note with the character and then not have him appear at all.

Tonight's episode was all about the drama and, for the most part, it delivered. Not only did the show hit us with some pretty strong emotional scenes, but it made some major strides with the plot and concludes with a whole lot of potential. It's just too bad we have to wait three weeks to see what comes next.

I considered bringing that up while watching the episode, but then I thought it kind of makes sense since even comic fans pronounce it differently. Seems logical people close to him would say it correctly and others wouldn't.

Next week is the Robert Knepper episode! and pretty soon Suicide Squad man I hope this means Slade and Waller get to have a nice lil chat.

So what's the point of the Laurel character now? Lotz already has better chemistry with Amell and is for all intents and purposes the Black Canary sans the name Dianaha Lance.

Ladies and gentleman, I hearby decree this my favorite episode thusfar. Finally a flashback sequence off of the island. Nothing really new was brought in by the Lance's flashback scenes but they were a welcome change from the things we're used to seeing. Plus, that ending flashback was really just crushing. That is the closest I've come to actually connecting with Laurel.

Nyssa and Sara was quite the surprise. But a welcome one. It made for a really interesting dynamic that I hope we see more of in the future.

And Moira is finally doing something this season. I've gotta say, that woman gives me the chills sometimes. She really knows how to intimidate using only her words.

It was a bit strange how little of a role Dinah Lance had in this episode. I feel like if they were going to go through the trouble of bringing her back, they should have at least given her a bit more to work with. Even just a reminder of how dedicated she was to finding Sara in the first season would have sufficed.

And Laurel's reaction to Sara. I'm torn. On the one hand, she is absolutely right. On the other hand, she still isn't redeeming herself and becoming a more likable character. I really hope that something interesting happens with her soon. Because I really want to like her.

The lack of Roy in this episode was odd. I imagine that Sara will take an interest in him considering the mirakuru.

And finally, the Arrow team truly feels complete. We've got Ollie, Dig, Felicity, Roy, and Sara. I can't wait to see them all together. The only thing that is really missing is Thea. Hopefully she'll join the club too someday.

The only big problem I had with the episode was the ending kiss. Seriously, that is just so messed up. As unlikable as Laurel is, Sara just seems to be going out of her way to screw her over (this is coming from someone who liked Sara). The Ollie-Sara romance just feels cheesy. I really enjoyed the platonic relationship between the two of them and hate the need that the writers feel to stick Ollie with every other female in the show. I hope that the romance doesn't go anywhere. Because it just feels awkwardly tacked on to an otherwise excellent episode.

Sucks, Not only do I normally hate Sara, but this is so forced its ridiculous.

It was okay.

And Moira is finally doing something this season. I've gotta say, that woman gives me the chills sometimes. She really knows how to intimidate using only her words.

She is really "powerful", imo.

And Laurel's reaction to Sara. I'm torn. On the one hand, she is absolutely right. On the other hand, she still isn't redeeming herself and becoming a more likable character. I really hope that something interesting happens with her soon. Because I really want to like her.

I don't get why everyone hates Laurel. Yeah she is a whiner, but her life sucks. I still like her, but she needs to get herself straightened out.

The lack of Roy in this episode was odd. I imagine that Sara will take an interest in him considering the mirakuru.

Eh, it was welcome. I am pretty Roy'ed out.

Thea should join as well, but the team is now pretty big at the moment.

I hate Sara's character, and I honestly thought she wasn't too bad in this one, until that stupid ending. Also I was waiting for Felicity to walk in on them, then have a ridiculous cliffhanger.

Ollie you're a billionaire. Stop beating up tractor tires and buy a Bowflex weirdo.

Honestly I thought it was weird how they went right from a girl on girl kissing scene, right to shirtless Ollie hitting a big piece of rubber with a long rod.... lol

This. All of this. Couldn't agree more. Especially in regards to Laurel's reaction. After she went on her rant to Sara I said aloud "That's a damn good point" followed immediately by "jeez, what a b****" after she threw the bottle as Sara was leaving.

Although, I think I might be the only one that isn't dissatisfied with the end kiss. It didn't feel tacked on to me at all. I always felt a really palpable tension between Ollie and Sara during the modern day scenes, and I saw a real depth in regards to a possible future relationship with the flashbacks on the island. Not to mention he picked her over Shado. In fact, I would say that Ollie and Laurel's relationship has been a lot more platonic this season than Ollie and Sara's. Again, whenever I'd see the two onscreen together, I felt something there, but when Ollie and Laurel were on screen it was more like "oh hey, it's my ex." Also, don't forget that according to Sara, Laurel knew Sara had a crush on Ollie before they were dating, and sabotaged a possible relationship between the two by ratting Sara out to their dad about her being at a party she wasn't supposed to be at. Then, while Sara was grounded, Laurel started dating Ollie. So, it seems hard-pressed to accuse Sara of wanting to screw Laurel over, especially since Laurel has been so adamant about not getting back together with Ollie.

Okay, I've typed way too much about a dumb, young-adult, romantic, love triangle. What I can I do to feel manly again?

I know! ...

BRO! WHEN THAT ONE CHICK AND THAT NEW CHICK KISSED, IT WAS SOOO HAWWT!!!!

That's better. It totally was though. I can't be the only one who rewinded the ol' DVR to get a second glance.

This episode seemed to veer off course for me . . . why build up the whole Roy becoming the Red Arrow and then have the very next episode not even include him? I'm just praying they're not biting off more than they can chew with the addition of too many criss crossing story lines . . . . just sayin . . . .

I fully agree with the confusing choreograph of the fights. The one mentioned made me think wtf, who's with Ollie? And another one where I thought Ollie got hit with an arrow, and just shook it off. That kiss was great, I felt it move jerry it moved.

@allstarsuperman: I really want to like Laurel. I feel bad for her and actually kind of agreed with her during her rant to Sara. But I just cannot bring myself to like her until the writers make an effort to make her less... angsty and annoying.

I feel your pain every time I watch this series.

I disagree about seeing any sort of developing relationship between Ollie and Sara in previous episodes. And truth be told, I was expecting Oliver to justify saving Sara over Shado by saying that he was thinking of Laurel and that he couldn't stand the thought of her losing her sister twice because of him. But they never went that route so I suppose it could have been because he had some feelings for her. To be quite honest, I feel like all of the romantic plots in this show really take away from the actual content (looking at you, Ollicity!). So here's hoping all of this relationship mumbo-jumbo chills out in the future.

Mispronouncing Ra's name is realistic. Most people who speak English would likely pronounce it wrong if they haven't heard it said first. Now if people who know him pronounce it wrong then that's another issue.

I don't like the constant love triangles. Ollie has had relationship problems with everyone from Diggle to Sara. I wouldn't be surprised if Ollie and Roy hook up for an episode.

Why was Roy not in this episode?

They should start rebuilding Laurel's character if that's what they are going to do. They've spent 13 episodes tearing her down and I hope they don't plan to redeem her in 1-2 episodes.

Christ, Laurel is dragging the show down so badly. Did she really have to wag the bottle in everyone's face before she poured herself a glass? So corny. And the rant? "Just like our Sara to get shipwrecked at sea and fall in with a ninja cult without calling us to let us know she's alive." I almost thought she was going to yell "the fans like you better than me" before she threw the bottle at the door. Now leave before you continue reuniting our family.

Well, /this/ fan (me) likes her more than Laurel, who has been nothing but annoying since episode 1, whether she's drunk or sober.

Plus, Sara wears tight leather and is the hotter sister, I'd choose her to go sailing over Laurel too.

Completely unrelated.... have we given up on SHIELD? No reviews? No commentaries?

They revealed Deathlok this week!! I think the show is starting to finally come out of its slow build up and people just need to have patience. You know what other shows sucked for the first half of their debut seasons? Fringe and Arrow... and both those are awesome when you stick with it.

they're dragging out Laurel's ascension to Black Canary with epic Smallville-esque proportions.

it's very obvious they're building up Sara to dramatically kill her off and use that as motivation to pull Laurel out of her depression and take up the mantle of Black Canary in her place... but they're really dragging it out and it's aggravating. Sara isn't particularly likeable or endearing either so it just makes it that much more painful.

@ips: I don't think I would argue that Sara isn't likeable or endearing but she is 1000x more tolerable than Laurel. The amount of development they would have to put Laurel through to get over the demons, finding the motivation, and then getting trained to take over as Black Canary if that is even the plan would be excruciating given Kate Cassidy's "As the World Turns" approach to Laurel.

Yeah, they pritty much Lana-Langed Laurel's character in half the time it took Smallville to do it, & that show even had Chloe since episode1. Its fairly obvious Sara will die in/near the finale & Laurel will start to become the 2nd Canary. But they should not. In fact, Canary should still be somehow spun-off into its own show, & the Lances retconned into other characters.

Not reading any spoilers going in, I figured the chick was either Talia or when she first confronted Sara that she might have been Lady Shiva.

I just wish Nyssa had a more revealing bikini type costume.

I do NOT want Thea to become Speedy2. I dont like the idea that in the span of a few months to a year that will pass between S2&s3 that both Laurel & Thea could ever become competent supers. It took Ollie, & Sara 5 years to. Because then why not rename Felicity Bonnie/Sissy King & have her suit up as Arrowette. No, since Mia Dearden is for some stupid reason Thea, introduce Bonnie/Sissy King as the former child prostitute that becomes in-field sidekick #2 Arrowette.

for me the best part of the episode was Oliver saying to Diggle "If half the stories I have heard about Ra's al Ghul are true. Then we will all pay if something happens to his daughter."
