Aquaman #2 - The Trench, Part Two

5

Aquaman and Mera try to get adjusted to life on dry land, only to be asked my the cops to help stop the Trench.

Aquaman and Mera's new land life comes to a quick halt when humans need their help to find a group of missing people at the docks. Cue The Trench.

The Good

Mera is awesome in this issue. I loved her trying to understand why human going skiing, as well as her quick temper with the ignorance of others. They explain her actual power set in this issue, which is simply water control. It's a lot like construct creation... with water.

Believe is or not, this book is pretty darn funny. It's not a comedic book, by any means, but there are some great one-liners in this issue. If anything, this book comes off more as an action/horror comic than anything, and that's exactly what this character and book needs. There's no rainbows in this book, only death, dinner, and destruction, and all of it is awesome.

I pretty much loved everything about this issue. The writing and art are some of the best of the new 52 super-hero books. The Trench, and their leader are some really cool villains for this book as well. They're incredibly creepy, and I like seeing a swarm of enemies rather than just one, for a hero to face. The Trench do seem to have a leader, and he's tough enough to stand up to Aquaman.

The Bad

I don't have a time machine to travel one month into the future to read the next issue. Yes, that's what I thought after finishing this issue.

This issue confirms Aquaman no longer has the "Aquahand." It doesn't matter though because Mera has him covered.

The Verdict

This book reminds me a lot of when Green Lantern started out under Johns' control. There were some changes here and there, and while some people got mad about them, it was better for the character and the book. At the same time, I never thought Green Lantern would be a top-tier book at DC, and now it is. I'm hoping, as ridiculous as this is about to sound, that Johns can do the same thing for Aquaman. I'm not lying when I say this is my favorite of the new 52. This is quickly also becoming my favorite book from any company. I rarely will say a book is perfect, but for me, it comes darn near close. Not only does it have everything I'd like to see in an Aquaman book, it has everything I'd like to see in a super-hero book. If you're not reading this book, you're missing out on the best new series.
